egr problem?
I've been chasing drivability problems on my 1990 gt-stumbling,missing,bucking or surging at part and wot.I scanned the car and I'm getting code 33-egr valve is closed.Wether it's the valve or the vacume hose to it-will that make my car run that shitty? Can the valve be cleaned?

You can clean an EGR valve but that shouldn't do what your saying the car is doing. YouTube "clean EGR valve" it will show you how (carb cleaner and rags)

The EGR is vacuum operated and monitored using the EVP (EGR Valve position) sensor. The EVP sensor is the white thing on top of the EGR valve. The EVP is responsible for letting the computer know what the EGR valve is doing and adjustments are made, providing that sensor is working. Check the vac line at the EGR and follow it to the fitting on the passenger side of the engine. A line leads to the EVR (EGR Vacuum Regulator) solenoid on the strut tower, it is the large one with the grey cap, ignore the two smaller ones below it. Make sure the lines are not cracked or broken and there are no restrictions. You can check the EVR and EGR valve with a hand held vacuum gauge, or clean the valve as they can get pretty caked.
Using the gauge Connect the gauge to the valve and apply 2-3in of vaccum. If it does not hold vacuum, replace the valve. If it does hold vacuum, replace the EVP. If vacuum does not reach the EGR during the KOER test, check the EVR. If vacuum does not reach the EVR, recheck the lines. It is possible the EVR itself is cracked. If vacuum does reach the EVR, replace it. When the EVP or EVR goes bad or the EGR is sticking, you can get a code as they work together. I replaced all but the EVP and still have some bucking in my 93, but no codes. Cleaning the EGR Get a new EGR gasket as they can tear some during removal. Pull the plug on top and remove the valve. Clean both openings with carb or brake cleaner. Work the pintle back and forth while you clean until the carbon is gone. I use a long nail and a pipe cleaner to clean mine out. If there is enough carbon build up the pintle can get stuck. Clean both the EGR and intake surfaces, put the valve back in and drive a bit. A dirty EGR valve is common and should be cleaned every now and then. Last edited by fb93; August 8th, 2011 at 09:03 PM. |
