Multiple Oil Leaks-302 Stroked to 331
This engine is new. Just built for my track car.
Strictly for road racing. Places like Watkins Glen, Lime Rock etc. Have 900 track miles and 50 street miles on the engine. Using Valvoline 20-50 Racing Oil (non-synthetic) Using Lucas Engine Break-In Oil 3 Oil changes so far Engine has 2 breathers After each time coming off track I'm getting oil all over the under carriage and the obvious spots on the ground. I'm finding very small amounts of oil barely noticeable on top of the engine. Some on the valve cover bolts, some towards the front of the engine and a very small coating near the breathers. The odd thing is each time I check the oil level it's within the normal range. I have not had to add any oil between changes. I have not yet been able to track down where the oil is coming from. But, it looks like it may be a few places. Is it possible the crankcase pressure may be too high and forcing the oil out of any space it can. The oil pressure gauge reads consistently at 50 psi. Does my crankcase idea seem plausible? Anyone have any ideas? |

This is a possibility. I would suggest UV dye and a UV light if you want to see where it's coming from for sure. I'd be willing to bet a header evac set-up in place of the breathers would take care of the leaks though.

fogged306.
The UV dye and light thing sounds interesting. Where would I get this UV dye (I've got a UV light) and is it simply just added to the engine oil, let the engine run and search for the dye? That sounds pretty simple. I'm not familiar with a "header evac system" unless that's another way of referring to an oil catch can set up attached to the breather openings. fogged306. Thanks. |

Is it coming out of the breathers? Do you have 2 breathers, or are you using a PCV?

Have 2 breathers. It's really hard to tell if the oil is coming out of the breathers. The oil is so clean it's really hard to see. But, it appears some may be coming out of the breathers. The thinking right now is, pressure building in the crankcase. Will try catch cans attached at the breather openings. As well as other EVAP options. The car is at my buddies shop now. he's a racer and has built quite a few engines. I trust him to figure this thing out. Thanks. |

Any parts store should have the dye. Usually they come in 1oz bottles that will work on up to 5 quarts of oil. Put it in, run the engine for a bit to mix it up, and then use the UV light to trace the leaks. It works best in a dark garage, the UV dye lights up like a glow stick in the dark.
Header evac is where you run check valves into your exhaust collector and run tubes from them up to your valve covers. It uses the velocity of the exhaust gases to create suction on those tubes, which will create vacuum in your crankcase. Helps to seal up a lot of little leaks on the pressure side of the oil system. Google "header evac" and I'm sure all kinds of stuff will pop up. The main function of header evac is to create the vacuum in your crankcase. Sealing up oil leaks is just a bonus byproduct. One piece of advice, if you do something like that, don't weld the checkvalves directly upstream of your O2 sensors.... |
