New to foxes

My dad just bought a 84 fox that was swapped form a v6 to a fuel injected v8.

I've never fooled with a the fuel injected 302. My 99 gt is a good car and I'll definitely keep it at least until I graduate and find me a good job but with the racing I'm doing, its just too expensive to work on this car. We got this car for near 1k but there is no rust at all on it and actually drives right now.

I have a few questions on it...

1. How touchy are these cars to tunes? Do I need one for a cam or heads?
2. What gas mileage do they normally get stock?
3. Do you need a tune to change to a better 5 speed? (tko or anything)

It has 0 rust on it and we have fenders to put on it. Our friend also paints and will do it all without charging any labor.

Are you sure thats an 84 cuz you have a 85-86 front bumper, most of the time when i see that i start thinking that its been hit.

But to answer your questions.......What year did the fuel injection come from ? cuz that will make a difference on some of the answers

Regardless no tune is needed to replace of upgrade the tranny.

To get the most power out of and head, cam swap, a tune wouldnt be a bad idea but isnt really needed in most cases.

As for MPG that all depends on you....but if every thing is fresh ( tune up, the right tire pressure ect)....17-20 mpg some times better.

Dad just told me it was a 1986. I thought he told me 84 so my bad. It has a 89 running gear in it. I'm trying to decide on if I want to sell my car in the future and build this or just run mine and let dad use this as a "diesel" saver.

I'm not a stickler on having to have good fuel mileage on a race car but I really don't know what to expect if i put a top end kit on it. I don't have a truck and trailer so I don't want to end up getting like 5 mpg and have to drive it to Mustang Week.

I have a 331 stroker, AFR 185 heads, trick flow R intake, 70mm TB 75mm mass air , 30lb injectors and im getting 13mpg and that with out it being tuned. but once the engine is fully broken in my MPG should go up. so i figure you would have done some thing really wrong if you ended up getting 5 mpg.

OR some thing really right but you better be running 8 sec in the quarter mile at 5 mpg LMFAO

I was just blurting out a number. I'd say a tune would really raise that up to around 15 for ya. I was thinking about going the route of putting a stock block in it from lmr and throwing a centri on it. that way in daily driving i could just stay out of boost and get some decent mileage.

If I could pull 17, I'd pull the trigger on the fox. That's about what I'd get in my 99.

My dad's fox is around 10.5:1 compression at 525 hp. We threw exhaust on it and made it "street legal" and it gets around 4 mpg lol.

Its a 347. Its just a nasty motor. The c4 and 4.10's don't help it much on the highway either.

I wouldn't mind about gas mileage if I had a truck and trailer. When I have to drive this thing to Mustang Week and daily drive it, it makes things hard when you're getting low gas mileage. I think I'm just going to help out with building it and see what happens in the future.
