new to me convertible gt

I just got my hands on a 1990 mustang gt convertible aod. it is not in very great shape cosmetically but my intentions were to use it as a parts car for my 92 2.3 coupe.

I'm think I'm liking the idea of fixing it instead, it's just fun to drive a convertible!!

The only major problem I've noticed on it is the trans won't shift into overdrive. The speedometer is not working so the problem might me coming from the same place. My 2.3 has the same problem and ended up being the connector for the 3-4 solenoid was not connected....

well I'll get some pictures this afternoon of my new(and ugly) aquisition.

What parts are you planning to use?

The transmissions are different and do not interchange. The 2.3 uses an A4LD and the GT uses an AOD. The A4LD is electronically controlled by the computer. The GT uses an AOD which is entirely mechanical, no computer operation. The AOD not shifting into 4th could be the shift linkage or the valve body, or the clutch inside the the case is burned. But since you have a 2.3, it doesnt matter.

The speedometer not working is usually a broken clip on the back of the dash or the cable is binding. It could also be the gauge, the speedo gear, or the speed sensor at the tail of the trans.

I am not sure yet if I'll be going for the swap, wife seemed to like the convertible.

I thought it could be the speedo cable. I thought AOD's after 85 were controlled electronically. I'll have to double check everything before pulling it out since it has been previously removed.

She'll look beautiful after a full restore. Also if u dont want to restore it Ive been lookin for a fox body ;p. Also the AOD has a mechanically controlled overdrive. Now the AODE had the electronically controlled overdrive. Good Luck with your mustangs

I believe the 84 or 85 model year was the first year the AOD was available in the Mustang which is what you may be thinking of. The AOD came with the EFI setup at the time. The CFI models (carb type setup) came with stick.

The 1994 model year was the first year for the AODE in the Mustang.

started tearing into it.

replacing the power steering pump with one I took out of a 95 3.8. cleaning some of the surrounding and possibly doing the e-fan since it's all removed already.

I took some shots of the progress but can't find the camera. I'll post them up tomorrow.

I agree something I would've never done is cut the bumper to make room for the exhaust tips. Now I have to get another bumper comper or figure how to cover that up.

I was able to get some work done yesterday. The bolts to the waterpump were installed wrong, whoever did the job lost the nuts that go between the bracket and installed the bracket behind the bolts. Waterpump is now removed and cleaned ready to go back on, as well as the new(used) power steering pump, and bracket. I'll get to the thermostat today and do some highly needed cleaning before putting it all back together.

Pictures coming during lunch hour...........
