brake booster/master cylinder noise

ok, this noise started a while ago, but i'm just now getting around to trouble shooting it. at first i thought it was just belt squeel, but after poking my head around in the engine bay, i've discovered it's coming from near or around the brake booster/master cylinder. it's a constant squeel, same volume and tone no matter the rpm, even idling. around the same time, i noticed my brakes stiffened up and were slow to stop the car, so i'm convinced its brake related now.

any ideas or possible fixes? will i have to replace the entire master cylinder?

thanks errbody
