F*%#ing Steering Rack......

When it rains, it fuckin pours!

Well I had a coolant leak in a bypass hose, but didnt find it until I flushed the system, and pulled 2 inches of sand out of the resivour.

Now that its fixed, I changed the oil, then noticed a horrible oil leak afterwards, thought maybe it was the oil filter, so I changed the oil for the second time and replaced the oil filter with a different make "stp".

Then I noticed it wasnt leaking oil, it was power steering fluid! (real dirty)

With further inpsection, I found its leaking from the steering rack bushing.

What am i looking at to fix this?

SHould this be a simple job?

Can someone give me the steps I would need to take in order to replace these bushings?

It looks like there are all kinds of little metal tubes connected around the rack.

I refuse to take my car to a shop, so they can overcharge me.

Thanks for the HELP guys!

It is easy if all goes smoothly... I spent around 6 hours just taking mine off. I had rust issues. From the steering shaft and one of the main bolts. I had tie rod rust issues, but I solved that awhile ago. If all come off with no hiccups', it is not that complicated of a job. Just a pain.

i think the bushings on my steering rack are leaking too, but i don't want to get a completely new rack because the previous owner put an aftermarket one in it and i've looked around for that one and its about $250.

timefor an upgrade....lol. flaming river rack. its an easy job, just rust/tight bolts/rounded off bolts make it a PITA. your best bet is to get a factory, rebuilt, or afetrmarket one. i suggest the latter of the choices. if you do change the rack. count how many turns it is to spin off each tie rod end so that the alignment/toe wont be far off when u get it aligned.

LOL, I aligned both of mine by eye. The first time with my 89, it was a bit off and it squealed the tires when I was just driving normally...lol
