90 GT rack n pinion leaking

The bellows on the pass side of my rack is leaking. I read somewhere that the bellows itself is replaceable and that would cure the leak but would there not have to be another seal inside there to keep the fluid in besides the bellows?

Youre better off buying a new rack.

A worn outer rack seal, inner rack seal, and/or rack bushing o-ring within the racks main body will cause one or both bellows to leak, especially when the bellow itself is torn, obviously. There is also a pinion seal buried at the bottom of the steering shaft. Fluid can find its way into the breather connecting both bellows if either the pinion seal or the inner rack seal is worn.

Either way youre looking at a rebuild. But if the inner surfaces of the rack are scored, replacing the seals is a waste of time and money.

thanks for the reply, sounds like I will just replace the entire rack unit.

Complete rebuilt steering racks that also come with new bushings, bellows, inner rods ends and rods already attached are like $90 + core. Get some new outer ends and flush out you PS fluid while you are there and you have a completely refreshed steering system for about $135 plus cost of an alignment.
