Temp question

Where should the temp gauge read normally? My 88 always read down at the bottom of the gauge but I know it was wrong lol. But my new 91 always has the needle pretty much exactly on the middle line sometimes just a little lower when its warmed up. Is that normal? I guess if my gauge is correct that middle line is technically 200 degrees.. but sometimes when I do more city stop and go driving it gets warmer. When this happens it gets about 3/4's up the gauge and one time it got to the line before the red. Why would this happen? It has a new single row aluminum radiator, stock fan and fan shroud, and it has coolant. Its just weird because it doesn't always happen in traffic either. Just once in a while. And highway driving it always stays on the middle line so it just happens when idling at stop lights pretty much but not all the time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys

the stock guages are known to be a joke! i have no idea what the actual temp sweep is on theese guages since it just says NORMAL, but the middle should be ok.i'll be putting in a 3 guage A piller pod in mine soon . narrow band a/f,water,and oil. plus i just ordered a new tack (recent thread on that).

Just a heads up, but a narrowband A/F is useless. narrowband o2's are good for finding stoich, but not accurate in any way for AFR.

^^ i know, but i'll be running n2o soon so i just want to have something to referance wether or not the car runs lean through the rpm range. hard to choke up $240 bucks for a wide band right now with all that i'm in the middle of right now. i'll change it out later on as more mods and parts are upgraded. right now i'd spend that money on a digital 6 plus box so i can get the timming retard for the juce. that way i can run advanced timming strolling around. i allready have a msd digital window switch w/tach. picked it up for $50 bucks.

If you want to run nitrous, read your plugs.. do not rely on that narrowband for that. You can get an innovate LC-1 with a gauge for 150-170.

I never knew how important a wideband was until i started tuning my car. The wideband runs in realtime so if you have a lean spike or if your running lean up top or low you will be able to see it and correct it right away.

Sooo can anyone answer the second part of my question? Why would my car warm up in traffic and only do it once in a while?

because you are moving slow. more air moves around the rad when you are moving. do you have a mechanical fan or electric fan installed? If mechanical, your fan clutch could be shot. If electrical, maybe it is too small. I used to run a 2 row rad out here in az and it would get to the middle of the range in my 88. I have a 3 row installed now (stock style from a 92 vert) and it barely touches the second dash mark from the bottom. I know these things aren't accurate but I thought I'd share my findings.

I have a mechanical stock fan with a new single row aluminum rad. Ahh fan clutch... that makes sense. Thanks.

It stays in the middle 90% of the time. Just once in a while it will climb pretty high.
