What Could It Be?

My 93 5.0 has developed a vibration problem. The vibration is worst in 2nd gear between 2000rpms and 3000rpm and third gear between 1500rpms and 2000rpm while accelerating but present in all gears to some degree. It really can be felt through the steering wheel. While cruising at a steady speed it almost goes away. The engine shakes a little while at idle and reving in neutral does not produce any vibration. I inspected the car and the driver side motor mount is cracked and appears to be missing a chunk of rubber. Is this the obvious culprit or should I look further?

Since you feel it in the steering wheel its most likely a tire out of balance or bad tire. How is your alignment? Wouldn’t hurt to replace those motor mounts while the car is up on the lift.

Thanks for the reply Gt. I switched the tires front to back and still got the same vibration. I was thinking that because of the dirvers side mounts close proximity to the steering wheel linkage and shaft it mite transmit vibration. What should I look at on the suspension.

Vibration at specific RPM usually means it is related to parts that rotate i.e. tires, wheels, drive shaft, u-joints, etc.

Its present all the time just worse(really noticeable) at those rpms. I will have to look at the drive shaft and u joints. The motor mounts have to go no matter what. Thanks again for the advice!

check your harmonic balancer. if their is rubber sqeezing out around it between the inner and outer rings than thats prolly the issue. very common with the 5.0's. i ve had a simmilar vibration since i got my fox last october.i allready replaced u-joints,drive shaft, motor mounts, and tranny mount. all of those parts helped alot, but i still have a small vibration! i'm building another motor though so im just going to let it ride for now. i'm going to buy a new summit balancer for it and put the stock balancer from the one im building on my old block

Tires could be screwed up, wheels could be out of balance, new motor mounts would help. Driveshaft could be off balance...

Couldnt get under the car today I did run the rpms up with the car in place to see if vibration could be felt. Well no vibration. So guess that rules out the accessories and the crank.
