i have hit a set back on 92.50

as some of u know me and my gf just bought our forst 92 gt with 81,000 miles on it. we had planned to take motor out this winter do a slight rebuild and new paint all over. well i was able to get under it yesterday and had a total shock. behind the bumper cover on the rear on driverside is all rusted out it has a small hole in corner of floor pan and a ton of surface rust. i belive the rear suspension and front is shot. my our plan was to take motor out like i said take everything out of engine bay and sand down and fab weld some spot. dron front and real susp and replace all rebuild the rear end tranny and motor. we r doing all the work ourself along with friend from foxbody club. we kinda set a budget of 5,500 for parts and what not but after seeing all the bad rust not sure if its a good idea to contiue with project. if anyone has suguestions please feel free to comment. ill get some photos of the bad spots soon.

I'd look for another drop top to build...I have only had to deal with rust a little here and there and its a real pain in the a$$ to deal with...unless you have access to a welder and sheet metal and have a lot of times on your hands to work on it....good luck on which ever you decide...

I'm having trouble uploading pics. Im thinking I'm going to replace drive quarter panel and fender aprons. One the body work is done we r going to sandblast the under neither then spray it with some sort of rust stopper then seal it all off.

I got the same problem myself. I bought mine and the car looked beautiful. From the outside you would never suspect any rust. But underneath is a ton of rust.

All four corners of the floor pans are rusted out including a little rust up the driver side kick panel. Honestly I am not worried about the floor pans since I can replace them. I have a welder and other tools to do the job.

However I also found a bunch of rust in the rear. The actual body is ok in the rear except the lower quarter panels behind the bumpers are rusted completely through. The rear frame and bumper is rusted badly.

The lower quarter panels, bumper, etc. can all be fixed without much trouble for me. But the frame being rusted scares the crap out of me. It has a big hole in it and the frame isn't something I want rusted out.

I was considering trying to grind it all off and see if I can get it down to bare metal, then weld some new steel on the outside edges of the rear frame to strengthen it up.

I am also thinking this may turn out more expensive than just getting a roller. This car is a hatchback and I kind of want a coupe so I may buy a coupe roller and move everything over.
