how to get the yellow out of my headlights

i have been looking at pictures on the internet of really nice foxes. 1 thing they all have in common is that there headlights are missing that yellow on the side. Is there certain years that dont have that yellow? or is there any way i can get rid of it?

If you want to put in some elbow grease you can just wet sand them, scratch fix 2.0, then plastix polish them. I'm sure there's a write-up somewhere on the forum but it's basically like this:

Step one: wet sand the surface of the headlight in a side-to-side motion with 600 grit sand paper. How long you do each sanding step determines largely how they'll turn out after everything is done. When I did mine I spent about 10 minutes on each piece. Make sure the surface is kept wet. Use a spray bottle of water with a couple of drops of dish soap in it to make the process easier.

Step two: same thing with 800 grit

Step three: 1000 grit

Step four: 1500 grit

Step five (optional): 2000 grit. I used this mainly because it made polishing the headlights easier.

When you're sanding be aware that how clear you want the headlights can be determined with how they look when they're wet. They're going to look cloudy as all get out while they're dry.

Step 6: Scratch Fix 2.0 polish. This is where everything comes together. Buff out the lights really good with this stuff, then add another layer and let it dry to a haze before wiping it all down.

Step 7 (optional but probably a good idea): Plastix polish. Just helps to shine them up nice and keep them safe. You could also use some VHT clear coat for them if you want it to last longer but I've just been keeping mine polished every other wash.

If it weren't for the fact that my car is all banged up I'd spring for some a set of single-piece units though. But this is a nice, budget conscious option and is an easy way to spend an afternoon with nothing else to do.

5.0 Lover,
Isambard is 100% right on.
I own a company that does interior repairs for car dealers and rental car companies. One of the non-interior services we provide is cleaning up faded headlights. We do it pretty much exactly like he described. The fogging or yellowish you see is oxidation of the UV protective coating that is on the lenses. In the old days these were made of glass, but were switched over to plastic for safety concerns. The plastic has a protective UV coating. That's the stuff that discolors. You are basically sanding off the UV coating and getting down to the lense. By using the soapy water and a fine grit paper you're insuring that you won't be damaging the lense. Like he said, do the sanding laterally, no circular or vertical sanding.
