yep, basically just the trim. the GT has the "body kit" (front fog lights, bigger bumpers, different spoilers) the LX has no side skirts, and a different spoiler. also, the stock wheels are different. mechanically all the same (5.0 vs 5.0).

also, not sure, but I think that all GT's were a 5.0, compared to the LX when many were 2.3 4 cyl cars.

also, some LX's were coupe's, but all GT's were hatchbacks.

I've owned both. I own a GT now but I can't really choose one over the other. I think it matters what look your going for. IMO the LX looks better with larger slicks and chrome exhaust tips coming out the rear. But the GT has a real sporty stance to it.

I've seen the GT effects on a coupe but I didn't like it as much. I think the coupe is better off with the LX look.

On a convertible, which I would only use for cruising anyhow, looks better with the GT effects.

If you plan to mod it and you want it to really be fast I'd go for the lx now. You'll appreciate the weight savings later.

Just my opinion of course

It depends on what you like! GT's are worth more and are better looking and come with nicer items. As for powerplant you can get the same gear in both. If you want all out speed go with a LX NotchBack (lighter and cheaper if you can find one). If you want a nicer car that is better looking go with a GT and stay with 91 and newer!

87-89 GT's had better suspension than the LX's. It wasnt until 1990 the LX got an upgrade. Both GT and LX 87-88 were speed density cars ( no MAF ) some people say these were the fastest years. In 91 you could get the GT with 3.08 gears while the LX stayed with 2.73, but you could order the LX with the 3.08 as an option. 91 was the first year of 16' rims too. And the GT's are 200 lbs heavier. I've had both, a 88 LX and a 90 GT. But my car of choice would be a 91-93 notchback LX. Still damn hard to find a good one !!!!!!

lol thats kinda silly because if the lx's had the same setup they would kill gts all day, either way i think it kinda comes down to what you like better, the biggest thing about both is they need lowered IMO, once you do that they both look real good

Where did you get that info? I've never heard or seen that. The suspension was exactly the same, tires and rim choices were different.

In 91 you could get the GT with 3.08 gears while the LX stayed with 2.73, but you could order the LX with the 3.08 as an option.
Your wording is confusing. 2.73 was standard, 3.08 was optional on both.

And the GT's are 200 lbs heavier.
Not if they were optioned the same, the spoilers, wing, and under molding do not weight 200lbs. You could pick up and hold all of them at the same time easily.

Bottom line, 5.0LX and the GT are effectively the same exact car, one with body kit and one without.
