AOD Tranny help

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum but am not new to Mustangs.
I recently bought my Daughter her first car, a 1991 LX 5.0 The speedometer bounces wildly around , mostly pegged to the limit, the tranny shifts fine but it seems to skip a gear, kinda like shifting a manual and going from 2nd to 4th, it just seems to bog down for a second. I was wondering if the speedo cable or a speed sensor, either of these being bad or something else other than it being the tranny itself could be confusing the tranny into shifting into a higher gear. Any info is greatly appreciated. I just finished restoring a 73 Fastback but these seem to have more parts that depend on each other to operate properly. Thanks

The speedo won't ever make a transmission shift from 2nd to 4th. You have some time of hydraulic problem. Most likely just needs a complete overhaul.

Someone call?
The speedo bouncing around sounds like a gear issue on the speed sensor or a defective cable or speedo head. Pull the speed sensor from the trans and inspect the plastic gear on the end. As for the skipping 3rd gear, an AOD is not an electronically controlled trans, so sounds as if there is an issue with the direct clutches inside. Ck the fluid, if it's dark and burnt smelling, time for a trans overhaul.....
