Coyote 5.0 vs old school efi engines!
SO!, I am down to 2 decisions a Coyote swap or build a Custom 302 or 351 based engine. My horsepower goal is about 700 to 900. It will be a street/strip car and will be EFI. I need to know any negatives about a new Coyote and if it handle the power with mods and still be reliable and can if old school engines perform better or not? Ups and downs guys help me on this one!

Coyote:
Pros - Much newer technology, DOHC, already starts at over 400hp, easy to make power with. Cons - Parts are $$$, getting the engine will cost $$$, will require fabrication to swap into a fox, will probably require boost which means new lower compression pistons. Old school 5.0L/5.8L: Pros - Parts are relatively cheap, parts are very easy to find, lots of information out there to make good power with these engines, 5.8L can handle the power you want. Cons - Will need an aftermarket block for the 5.0L if you go with the 5.0L, your goal will require boost. I am sure there are more Pros and Cons of each but this is all that popped into my head right away.

408 TT and be done. The coyote motor is cool and all, but you could build two motors for the cost of building 1 coyote motor.

I agree with what the others have said. Time is money. Use it wisely and build yourself a bored out 351 to reach your goal.

new coyote costs over 10k just in engine things, 6500 motor, new oil pan, k member, exhaust 1500, engine management 1500, new throttle pedal, and other parts build on lmr.com they have it all on there. 8-10k for just the boss motor, 5k supercharger.

The new 5.0 DOHC would be cool in the fox body. If money and knowledge is no problem do the Coyote swap!

Well I dont want kool I want performance. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna stick with a 351 based Aluminator Boss block that Ford Racing just started to release. Is there anything that wont fit on a 351 block from a 302 block? And sorry for the Newbie question but 5.8L is a 351 right? and does anyone know all the boring options for the 351? 408, 427,..etc. ?

Cheaper to do a 351 and go fast. It's older technology but it hasant failed us yet. Just built a 306 and slapped s trim on and I should be around 400hp on low boost and 93 gas. Spent in total $6,000 from intake too oil pan. I don't even think 6k bye the new 5.0 motor

$5,700 coyote engine, $1600 engine control kit, $300 alternater kit, $700 tubular k-member with mod motor mounts, $500 bellhousing to use T-5 with the 5.0 mod motor. Thats $8,800 total cost for the swap minus the exhaust system. Safe to say 10k and that motor alone in our foxes will burn an a 11.50 in the quarter mile. I'm sold on the coyote swap. That's what I'm going with. $600 Nitrous kit and you're in the 10s.

Can you tell me where to find the swap kit parts at? I've got a 10k budget and was fixing to build me a turbo engine but this sounds like it could be fun and add some more value to the car. |

I have a friend that bought the 5.0 from somewhere (can't remember where). Sorry man but I know they said they got the motor for $5,700...looking around I sourced some cheaper parts. Latemodelrestoration has the control module for $1,400, alternater kit for $200, bell housing for $550, k-member for $700, 5.0 swapped long tube headers for $600. All that totals $9150. Figure shipping and misc. parts. You actually will be over the 10k mark. Something to think about, thats a modern fuel injected motor in a light car. You'll get great mpg, tons of power, and reliability cause its a STOCK motor.

If you wanna see 10s...you just may have to spend that kinda cash on a turbo push rod motor as well. Getting a block that support 500+ hp, forged internals, turbo kit, fuel supply or a blower that could turn enough boost. Where as with the 5.0 mod motor, its a stock motor, with some nitrous on tap. My friend has the 5.0 mod in his fox, turned a 11.50 with motor only. So with nitrous 10s are definately possible.

Another thing to note is that either route you go you will need to upgrade your rear suspension to plant the power to the ground, that will increase overall cost.

I am with him a 408 with good heads will fall out a tree and runs 10s seen it done to many times and still have good street manners with the right cam. And think of the room you have to grow. In the end there will NEVER be replacement for displacement.

My 408 just made 435/429 with hammered plugs, fuel pressure problems, carb issues, and 31* of timing on 91 octane. Once the bugs are ironed out, it'll probably make 450+, and I drive it almost every day. It's very very streetable, and that would easily go 10s in a fox.
