how do i retard the timing
so i have a 1989 mustang gt 5.0 ho, i did the timing a couple months ago because it kept bogging out when it got to 4500 rpm and didn't really want to run like how it was supposed to, it got good but now its bogging out again.i changed the spark plugs, wires, and cap and rotor and did the timing. now i did the timing but there is only 1 line on the harmonic balancer and im not sure if its stock 10 degrees or for something else, but what i want to do is advance the timing to 14 degrees, but how do i know how to get to 14 degrees, i gave the timing gun but just need to know which way to rotate the distributor and what i will be looking for with the timing light if there is only 1 line down on it. help a brother out please

I'm new into Mustangs but I'll try and shoot you in the right direction.
Look at the base of the distributor and you will see a plug with a grey box plugged into it, to adjust the timing you will need to remove that box from the plug, after that can continue to adjust the timing, to do so you will loosen the hold down clamp then proceed to adjust timing, depending on what light you have will determine this step, if you have an adjustable light you will need to use a white paint stick to mark the ballancer on the line witch is TDC , start the car and turn the knob on the gun to 14* than turn the distributor until the line matches up with marker, if you have a fixed gun you will need to mark the ballancer at 14*, you can do this by using a timing tape for the diameter ballancer you have,or use a degree wheel to give you a good idea where to mark if both of those are not available than guess as best you can, looking at the engine from the front advance is going to the left of the line on the ballancer. after adjustment is made re-tighten hold down and plug the grey box back into the plug. Hope this helps you, best way is adjustable light using stock dampner. |
