87 Ford 302
So instead of fixing up this motor that is currently in the car, we were thinking of using a 87 302 that my dad had out back. the motor had only 110K in it, and it wasn't run hard. That being said, the motor is out of a truck. I was wondering, though; is this a wise choice?
Also, that noted, I was wondering what maybe 300-400$ worth of budget in parts would be. I am not sure if the heads on this motor I currently have are gt40, but I will be checking sometime soon to see, and if so, it'll save me the time and money for buying a set. Other than the gt40s, what is another good improvement over stock since the motor will be sitting on a stand for a little while?? cobra upper/lower as well as a cam? stronger springs? just leave your input here and it'll be greatly appreciated. -I know that there are probably threads over asking "WHAT CAN I DO TO THIS", but I just want the stuff to be here on this page for this specific motor. Thank you for your input! |

If it's an 87, the only major differences between that truck motor and a mustang motor will be the intake and the cam (and probably oil pan). Heads (e7) and shortblock will be the same. What you mentioned is a good start with stronger springs on your GT-40 heads and a better intake and cam.

Awesome. Other than that on the heads and springs, what else could I might do while the motors on the stand, given I have 300 more (plus $400) on budget??

Are you planning on using the motor as is, or using it as a base for a build?
The HO motors (which weren't used in the trucks) have a lot more differences than just the intake and cam. They don't even use the same firing order.

Cam is what dictates the firing order. Shortblock and heads are the same.

Truck motors were using forged pistons? And double-roller timing chains?

Couldn't tell you if the trucks were forged or not or if the timing chains were double. Were they even double rollers from the factory in an HO? Either way, honestly not a concern in the op's case. Forged pistons aren't needed with GT-40 stuff and I would hope that when you're swapping cam's you would replace a 110k timing chain if it hasn't already been replaced at some point. I really don't see how either of these are an issue here.

I just remembered that the old truck motors weren't roller cam blocks. So I take back what I said, the shortblock is not the same. The lifter bores are shorter (IIRC) and there's no holes tapped in the block for the holddown spider. So you would have to buy flat tappet lifters and cam with the 351 firing order, or link-bar roller lifters to put a roller cam in. Forgot all about this.

Ah, okay, cool.
Just wanted to make sure I wasn't mis-remembering things.

Search for a 5.0 out of a ford explorer at your local salvage yard. They can usually be had for $300-$500. They already have either GT40 or GT40P heads, Explorer/GT40 intake, 65mm TB, etc. Just put your Mustang acessories onto the Explorer long block and your set. Or better yet add a mild cam & valve springs for added performance!

The GT 40 will have 3 hash marks on the front of the head, and the GT40p will have 4 marks.
