Backfire/Pop noise under acceleration
Has anyone ever had this problem with their Mustang? I recently changed the stock distributor to a MSD Distributor, plugs and wires. When I start it up it hesitates for a few seconds, but when I get on it say 1500-2000 rpm it sputters and I hear this pop on the passenger side of the motor. After this pop / backfire is heard the car takes off as if a normal health engine would want to get up an go with no problem at all. I have the timing set at around 12 degrees. Could this be a spark plug wire issue not fully seated on the plug?

my 01 gt with o/d off letting off at at 100mph in the 1/4 makes popping noise too in the upper rpm's its normal though. I heard its letting off from the high rpm's in 3rd gear.

Its not multiple pops though. On take off when its running crappy it does just 1 pop and then mustang takes off like it should as if its a health engine.

if its only when you take off after you first start your car, i imagine it has sometime to due with timing/air-fuel. Let your car warm up for 20-30 seconds then take off, see if it still does it.

Could an intake leak cause this? Say for example if the car did warm up for 20-30 seconds. It doesnt seem to have this problem when the engine is at operating temp.

Im sure its possible, if you had a vacuum leak or something. how are your hoses? they still good, or all hard and cracked

I did have to replace a hose that was hard and broken in places which used vacuum but that wasfor the climate controls. One thing I didnt mention was that at times it will idle higher than normal. It can get up to 1500-1700 rpm during idle. I just don't know if its related to the pop that occurs.

I'm going to recheck my wires. I'm gonna make sure that the #4 is getting a good connection. The headers I have on there makes it hard to plug into the spark plug.

Sounds like an air/fuel or timing problem to me. The popping is unburnt fuel and could be a misfire, sounds to me like its running a little lean. I don't know much about the 5.0 but I assume that the fuel injected models were direct injection. If so, maybe try running some fuel injector cleaner through it. I've seen that clear up some lean conditions before and if it doesn't work it only costed like $6.

Well the popping went away. I actually need to replace one of my oxygen sensors. I dont think that was the cause of it though. Someone I talked to was telling me that the computer had to relearn the fuel curve / pulse after I replaced my exhaust manifold with bbk equal length shortys. Anyone know if thats true?
