Will AFR 185's fit on a stock bottom end??? (PICS)

I found a really good deal on a pair of afr 185's that one needs very minor work but I just looked on AFR's website and they said that the 185's wil not fit a stock motor even with a stock cam without notching the pistons...Is that absolutley true??? I am not taking my motor apart nor out of the car if it is...I wanted to have them fixed and install them in a weekend.

Please help??? Should I buy them or pass them up...Man I really wanted some afr's...What set of heads are comparable and that will match my sytemax intake besides these without tearing into my low mileage bottom end?

Has everyone that run afr's been into the bottom end of there 302?

You don't have to pull your bottom end apart to fly cut your pistons. You just need to mask off the area and make sure you clean all the shavings before you put the heads on.

How is that cut done? Is there a machine that I can rent or is it grinded out? If so, how to make sure each cylinder is cut exactly and maintain the same weight?

You remove the valve and the tool goes through the valve guide just like it's a valve. Then you install the piston and turn the cutter. Use a caliper with a depth measurement probe end on it to measure the depth of the cut. As long as they're all the same depth, then the same amount of weight has been removed from the piston and you don't have to worry about balance.

I bought the through the head piston cutter from the company below, and it works awsome!

AFR 165's will fit a stock bottom end.

I have TW 170's on a stock 89 HO short block with a Comp XE266HR(216/224 w/.544/.555 lift) I had over 100 thousands PTV clearance, but every engine varies, so check it anyway! (for what it is this engine runs awsome)

Yes. Especially with the stock bottom end. AFR makes a good head, but on a stock bore block the inline heads with a 2.02 valve suffer from shrouding of the intake valve. The valve relocation on the TWs unshrouds the intake valve, and gives better P to V clearance than an inline head.

Don't bother with those heads. Not worth it for $400. Look into TW's like ^ homo said.

Thats what Im begining to think...I think I might pass, even if I were to fix them plus the cost to buy them, I would be close to 800 or so...Just to try to sell them at 1000 or even 900. Not worth the headache for 100/200 in profit if I even make a profit...I think I might just wait around for some twisted wedges. Thanks...
