Tall Guy Fox Mustang?

I am 6' 5" and own a 90 LX Hatch. I have been debating selling the car because I don't fit. I grew up around Fox bodies and this one is super clean so it's tough to sell. I am looking for suggestions on how to get more head room and be comfortable.

Right now I am test fitting a Corbeau A4 standard seat with Corbeau's low profile seat bracket. The seat bracket will not work without some modification. It hits the trans tunnel. Currently I have the bracket mounted on a set of seat extenders to lift up enough to work. With this setup I can sit with good posture and my hair just barley rubs the headliner. If I was to order this seat I would purchase the wide version with an extra inch shaved off the seat cushion and I would find a way to make the bracket work. That combo should give me a decent amount of head room. I may even be able to wear a helmet. My fear is once I am sitting so low with my knees up high I will still have comfort and back issues.

Any other tall guys on here that love Fox Mustang and have came up with a good solution?

Thanks,
Rob

Sorry, no direct help but... My son is just over 6'6", he drives my foxes with stock seats but I think he just got used to it as most cars for him are tight. He tilts the seat WAY back as well.

they do have brackets that move the seats back a couple inches to give more leg room. I think CJ pony parts carry them.

Curious to what year fox you have? Wonder if different years are different sizes inside. I had a 93 and had plenty of room. Im 6'3" and fit fine.

I have the seat bracket extenders. Problem is when you add those it raises the seat about a half inch. What I am lacking is headroom. I have to slouch and/or ghetto lean my stock seats. If I could gain 2-3 inches of headroom I would probably be fine. With the stock seat in place there is no way I could go to the track and put a helmet on.

I have a 1990 LX Hatch.

Why not make some custom brackets? And so long as no one else drives the car, you can gain 1/2" or so of headroom, maybe more, by deleting the slider rails.

I feel you on this, at 6'7" I'm pretty tight in there. I got the relocation brackets for the stock seats and I still need to tilt the seat pretty far. I don't need to sweat the helmet, so I guess I'm ok with my clearance. Good luck man

also, think about dropping the seat to the floor in the back and chanel the front seat mount where it attaches to the floor. Buying your own welder to customize your seating situation is cheaper than buying a new car.

This ^^^^! I'm 6'7"(38"inseam) and the only way I can fit into any of the Mustangs that I have owned is to modify the seat & rails(heavily). My current ride is an 01 and I probably have about 40 hours into the mods of my factory seat. I removed any riser buit into the seat and also modded the seat pan and rails. I also did this with the Bride seat also(along with widening it) and probably gained about 4" of head room and 4-6" of leg room. I pretty much sit on the floor and wearing a helmet is no problem.

As for back issues and comfort, anything is better than slumping down or doing the gangsta lean!

Thanks for the great ideas. I am the only one that drives the car so fab work is an option. Designing something that works should be a fun winter project.

Hardest part is making it look factory. Good luck with your modding.

I talked to the wife the other day after all the suggestions. She likes the idea of me buying a welder, small chop saw, work bench, vise and grinder VS installing racing seats. I have been kicking around the idea of getting a welder for a couple of years. I never pulled the trigger because I have a small garage. Anyways I am now moving all my storage crap to the father in-laws basement and shopping for some new tools. A co-worker has a Miller 135 he will sell me but neither one of us know the value. If that does not work out I will probably by the newer Miller 140.

Any welder recommendations are welcome. Thanks Rob

i love miller, you just caint go wrong with one. lincoln and hobart also make a very nice made in the usa welder in a 140 . never get sucked into buying a welder made by anybody else than the three above. the hobart handler 140 would be a little bit cheaper than the miller or the lincoln, but they are made by miller and are a great quality servicable welder.

Just make sure you go to a welding supply store to purchase your welder. The units sold at the large home improvement stores are NOT the same units you will get at the welding stores!

I have been using a Lincoln SP135T for years now with great results. Make sure you get the bottle setup with your welder and a bottle of MIG gas, yes you can use flux core wire but you will have much better results with the gas.

also buy a good hood. get an auto-darkening hood. i have a miller pro hobby and love it, and if something like the headband where to break i can go down to cee-kay and buy just a headband right off the shelf. i think i paid $160 for mine a year ago.

I was shopping for a helmet made in the usa. I have found on other welding sites that this is a good unit made in the states.

Welding Helmets | Welding | ADF | Auto Darkening Filter | Auto Darkening Lenses | Welding Safety | JACKSON SAFETY

check their site for a retailer near you. I may be picking one up this week depending on what is available at the u fix it center and my friend's place.

Thanks for the welding suggestions. I will shop at one of the three welding/gas shops that our pipeline welders use. I am not even going to try the flux core. I plan to get a bottle of 75/25.

What do you guys use for a table?
I was thinking of getting a Nomad since I have limited space.

That doesn't look bad. I use my shop table, it's a switch gear cabinet that I laid on it's side and welded the sides on it's about 8' long x 40" high x 30" deep.Works pretty good, weighs about 200lbs so it stays put.
