2011 370Z, anybody run one?

I have a friend with a 370Z , I had the opportunity to ride in it today and despite the quoted 330HP ( 2012 Nissan 370Z Coupe | Vehicle Specs | Nissan USA )I wasn't too terribly impressed. I mean it was quick but I feel that my Mustang is much quicker. I mentioned this to another friend (Civic Si owner) and he feels that i would lose to a 370Z... I disagree but I come to you for your thoughts on the possible race. My mods are in the sig, in addition to that i have a short throw shifter and Stage 2 clutch. I guesstimate that i may have 280-300 Flywheel HP?

Thanks

You probably don't have that much hp, I'd say closer to 250 or so. I think it would come down to driver in your case. If you can drive and he can't you could pull it off. I drove one of those cars a while ago and it was ok. Cars weigh about the same but the nissan has more power and revs faster and higher.

I've had one ask if I wanted to line up next to him at the track a few weeks ago, and his feelings got hurt badly..lol. He didn't want to talk about it.

He's got considerably more power than you, but weighs a little more. In a race where drivers are equal, I don't think you can win.

I'm pretty sure the 370z is a force to be reckoned with. I agree with fogged306, you probably have less than your estimated hp figure; a cam and heads is what you might need to achieve that. Anyways, you might have more torque? Shorter gears? These things definitely give a sensation of speed even if horsepower is less

I'm sure that i have more torque than he has, and I am a better driver than he is. I tried to get him to race and he is ducking the race. By the time he actually agrees to race i may have heads (GT40)

EDIT: Yeah he is a standard trans too

Torque doesn't win drag races, HP does.

Yes That is correct. But I did run a 14.27 sea level equivalent with the AOD (which was smoking badly an hour before the run). The T5 feels like a night and day difference, i have heard quotes that it makes a .5 - 1.5 second difference in the quarter mile. If that is true then wouldn't the .5 second difference put me right in contention with the 370Z?

If you had a stock TC in that AOD then yea going to a T-5 will wake the car up pretty good. LIke I said it'll be a drivers race. Cars are relatively close. Good driver vs. good driver I think the 370z will edge it out every time. If you can 60ft, you'll get him. Those cars are probably shit out of the hole but will start to make up ground pretty quick.

My boss went 13.9 in his G37(same drivetrain as 370) when it was stock, on rubber band tires.

I agree that you do not have hp you think you do. How did you come up with that hp number? Did you add up the advertised hp of each part? Cuz it doesn't work like that... Lol don't believe every thing you read. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just saying.

lol no i guesstimated it based on advertised hp gains cut in half and experience from other vehicles (horsepower/weight) i have driven/owned.

I don't know about your car. But I pulled about 3 lengths on one from a 40 roll. Had some trouble off the line, as soon as i caught traction it was over. Then again my newly aquired 82 is making about 380 to the wheels.

how do you figure this when torgue is the amount of force being applied to turn the wheels?? im pretty sure that hp is not even a real measuered number, it comes from converting torque and rpm speeds

Thats right, thats how hp is measured. Torque x RPM / 5252 = HP... HP means power. So take 2 engines that make the same torque but at different RPM's. 300lbs at 2500 and 300lbs at 5000... 300 x 2500 / 5252 = 142 HP .. 300 x 5000 / 5252 = 285. Depends on where the torque is made. So just saying you have 300 lbs of torque doesn't mean shit really. Think of torque as how much work an engine can do and RPM as how many times in a minute an engine can do that work. The more times in a minute you can do that amount of work, the more power an engine has and so it will have a higher HP rating. You also have to consider a bunch of other things like how fast the engine accelerates. When you're talking about drag racing and a lighter engine will out-accelerate a heavier one every time given the same power levels (referring to rotating mass here).

But the all mighty Mr Shelby himself said, "horsepower sells cars. Torque wind races." LOL

Torque at the WHEELS is what wins races. And more peak hp always means a potential for more torque at the wheels. But that power is really only 100% usable if you had a CVT that could keep the engine at peak output the whole race. With discrete gear ratios the area under the power curve between gear changes is what wins races.
