Speedometer cable problem

When I bought my mustang, the speedometer cable was broke. I bought a new one and installed it the other day. I took my car for a drive today just to see if it would work. The needle slammed all the way past the numbers and now this cable is broken. Is it possible that the gear on the transmission is the wrong gear and caused the cable to break? Thanks.

did you pull the cable back out to make sure its broken. I would have thought your gauge would have broke before the cable would have

When it comes to your speedo does it still count the milage or does nothing work ? If it still counts the milage it's most likely your gauge and not the speedo cable

Yeah, I pulled the cable back out. It is broken. I called the manufacturer and they sent me a replacement. I'm going to check my gears in my rear end and order the correct gears for the transmission and speedometer cable.
