weak start - dies while running - gauge reads low voltage

So I was sitting in the drive through of TACO BELL and i noticed my voltage gauge was reading 8 and needle was hovering near the red bar. I was in netural of my automatic and shifted to drive and the car dies. AAA came and towed it to my house. Today I went and was able to start it with my F250. voltage gauge and everything else read normal. Took it and ran it hard around town for an hour took it home parked it. I went back out about an hour ago and it refused to start again. Any ideas? I know that there is a possibility of the alternator being shot but its only 3 years old and the battery is newer than that. Is there a voltage regulator that went out? Any help would greatly appreciated as usual. Thanks boys!

+++ I got codes 11 66 and 96 when i ran the Key on engine off self test.

fire it up and pull the positivie off while running and see if it stays running or if you can get it running and take it to a auto parts store most of them can check the whole charging system for free

I thought of that and got it started, disconnected the battery positive terminal and it died immediately...

pull ur alt off and take it to a parts store and have it tested if you bought it will lifetime warrenty get it replaced most of them sell that way now

Update... Alternator was bad took ten test to finally get a fail at autozone... took the red top battery with it... ;( 400 bucks later and she runs great!
