91 331 Build Help
So i recently just bought a 91 foxbody and i am looking to throw a 331 into it but need a bit of help. I am going to use this car mainly as my daily driver and i want more power out of it. Eventually down the road i plan on throwing a supercharger on it as well. I am thinking of buying the Street Fighter Short Block Ford 331 Reverse Dome from CHP CHP Street Fighter Short Block - Ford 331 Reverse Dome -14.2cc but i am not sure what heads cam intake to go with. A guy at a local shop suggested 1987-93 Mustang 5.0L Top End Engine Kit with Black Trick Flow Street Burner Intake, Twisted Wedge Heads And Trick Flow Stage 1 Camshaft at LRS - Same Day Shipping! let me know your thoughts or concerns. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated

If you are planning on adding boost, I'd go with the Pro Street kit. At least you would have forged crank & rods for a few hundred more. But depending on your boost levels, you'll have to worry about breaking the factory block anyway.
On a 331, I'd probably go a little bigger on the rest. Probably the Trick Flow 190 FAC heads, their R intake and either their stage 2 cam or a custom! Then make sure you've got everything else to match also. 75mm TB & Spacer minimim, 255 or 340 lph in tank pump, 1 3/4" headers. 50 or 60 lbs injectors for the blown application, etc., etc.

Trick flow is a vary good head from what ive heard. But since your going with a stroker, id recomend at least trick flows 185 head. You maybe fine with there basic 170 head but if you have the cash go with some thing a little bigger. And as for the cam, you should go custom. if your going to stroke your engine , you dont want to be limited by cheaping out, or by using 302 parts. You have to remember, your going to have 331ci, not 302ci, so you need heads ,cam, and intake that are going to flow more to feed that beast. 302 parts will get you 302 power.
Also you may be pushing the stock block to its limits if you stroke it, and put a good hci combo on, and then supercharge it. Im not saying for sure the you will break the factory block, but you will be on borrowed time, its your money do what you want, but if it were me id save a little more and get a dart block.. the funny thing is, im doing to the same set up. Im supercharging my 331 at tax time. and i followed the advice i was given and thats why i have the dart block, a 185 head, custom cam for a power adder, and a high flowing intake. my combos not perfect, but its good sinse i live in california and there dicks about there smogging laws

Every thing is legal on my car except INTAKE, My two cated x pipe ( i should have all four cats to be legal, but ive kept my stock one just incase i need to swap back) and my cams not legal. Im hoping that the smog guy wont be able to tell if my intakes legal or not. and i plan on getting it tune, My goal is to get it chipped with two tunes, one to pass emissions and the other for max horse power. Im keeping my fingers crossed, cuz im not sure how this is going to go. lol

that kit is nothing more than trick flow stuff for a 302/306. If you want big power, be ready to spend big $$$
Also consider the cost of components in any kit individually. Is it a good deal or can you get more for your money spending a little bit more? The stage 1 cam seems a little small for a 331 vs 306. Research the heads, intake and cam, see how it compares to other options available. ...ask yourself this, if that kit makes 350hp/370tq on a 306, what's it going to do on a 331 with larger injectors? If boost brings the power up another 40%, will a remanufactured block handle it? Are the components of the rotating assembly known to hold up good for what you intend? |
