OVER Heating Issues......

Hi my names austin, i'm recently a new member here at modded mustangs!!, i have a 1994 mustang gt convertible. recently i've had problems with it over heating. the car warms up slowly and then when driving it on the freeway the gauge spikes up a little, but when i proceed to try to cool it down by turning on the heat the gauge tips over further, and when i turn the heat off the gauge goes down alittle then spikes right back up..?
any idea's on what this could be or cause this issue??

i've replaced the thermostat myself with a 180 degree thermostat ...

man, the cooling systems on these things are sooo good, I live in south alabama and seldom have problems, but the times i have it was the usual suspects; thermostat, low coolant (check when cold), bad fan clutch, obstructed radiator. also, don't put just water in it either.
good luck

Just for a test, next time it overheats put on the A/C and see if it cools down.

Yeah, because if the car doesn't get any cooler with the a/c on, you might want to get that fixed too. Wait, maybe he meant the water temp getting cooler. Never mind. Booty, it was a hard choice for me too, but like you, i went with the overheating. I would check all that usual stuff that was mentioned up there somewhere.

Ok. In a 1994 Mustang they had electric fans that are thermostatically controlled. They either go on when engine is hot or default and go on when the AC is turned on. Its common for the thermostatic switch to go bad and not turn the fan on when the motor gets hot. To test we turn on the AC defaulting the fan to run and cool the car. If the car cool off when AC is running there is a problem with the thermostatic switch or relay.

Unless you have some serious mods done like heads/cam/intake and supporting mods I really don't think the ECU tune is going to matter all that much. I doubt you will see those numbers.

I'm not sure about the '94, but I know the foxbodies had a bad problem with faulty heater cores. The one in my old 87 went bad and I had to run a bypass hose form the heater core inlet-to-outlet and it cooled fine. I'd check the other solutions listed first, though, cause like I said I don't know about the 94's.

Heater core issues will not cause overheating.
