drive shafts

I have pulled the drive shaft to change some worn U-joints.. when i took out the bolts and release the shaft from the rear end there was alot of space left between the end of the drive shaft and the rear axel....(a good inch to 2 inches). the question is how much space should there be and what is the length of the drive shafts.... i think some ass has put the wrong one in my car.
btw it is an 86 5.0L 5speed.
thanks for the help

I'm confused? The 4 12 point bolts should hold the drive shaft firmly against the pinion. I'm not sure how there could be any space in between? The yoke on the transmission side slides in and out a few inches. remember also that if you jack the car up by the body, as the axle drops down it also gets closer to the transmission (it pivots about the control arms), so you want your yoke to be able to move in enough to accomadate suspension travel, otherwise you'd be in a serious bind...

the 4 bolts do hold the drive shaft to the rear end,,,, however when i pull the bolts off and push the drive shaft towards the transmission, there is a 2inch or more gap between the end of the driveshaft and the rear end... I think it is the wrong axel because i have never seen this much space on other mustangs before,,,,,plus the u-joints that i just picked up don't fit,,,soooo!

On the U-joint side of things, did you get them yourself, or go to an auto parts store? The automatic and manual cars take different joints. Could have the auto version in your hands...

ok got the deal,,,, 86 mustangs have the same u-joins for auto and standard. 87-93 have two different size u-joints for auto and standard....still neither of the u-joints still fit.. after an hour of so f&%*^ around we found that the drive shaft is fron an f150 standard. i guess this is a common swap for people whom like to bend drive shafts.. And for the dick who sold me the car, thanks for mentioning ""NOTHING!"" was changed from tranny back.

Thanks everyone for the help in diagnosing this situation
