I am pretty sure a lot of them have the grinding reverse. It is not synchronized. Are all of your other gears fine? Is your clutch engaging before it gets close to the floor. Try shifting to third before you put it into reverse. See if that helps any. Welcome to the site.

Yeah, mine does that too. My neutral safety switch is disabled, so I go 5th to redo if I need to back up. Its not popping out of rewind like yours, but sometimes, on a downshift, 2nd won't fully engage. I have a brand new clutch in mine also. Thought that was the problem. It was grinding like that before, but that didn't fix it. Other than the occasional shearing, no problems outta the T-5

Same here. I have to put it in another gear before putting it in reverse. And lightly feel reverse before I shove it in so it dont grind. Plus do the whole, disengage then reengage the clutch.

This is normal for a T5. It has no syncronizer for reverse so there is no way for the collar to syncronize to the gear speed before the teeth engage. This is what causes grinding. If you go to another forward gear first it helps that gear and collar to engage without the use of a syncronizer. I have never heard of one kick out of gear in reverse so that is possibly an issue but the grinding going into reverse is pretty common.

Could be I guess. I have heard that if you have a bad tranny mount it can cause the tranny to sag and put pressure on the input shaft. I have read that this pressure on the input shaft puts the tranny in a bind and can cause it to kick out of gear in certain gears. Don't know if this counts for reverse also but maybe take a look at your tranny mount.

He said it was grinding in reverse, not when he was shifting into gear. If that is the case, you likely have a bad reverse gear or idler gear. This would also explain the popping. Bent shifting forks could also cause this problem.
If it only grinds going into gear, then I agree with the above posts

Doesn't sound like that has anything to do with shifting to me...I don't usually shift repeatedly while I am backing up...maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I had a friend that once tried to do a reverse wheelie in a VW GTI by side stepping the clutch at redline, while his friend sat in the back seat and held the shifter in place with his feet Needless to say, the car never backed up under its own power again

Carnage is cool. Sorry, didn't see the part where he said it was popping out of gear. Could be a fork. Stop driving backwards.

He said its doing two things. it is popping out of gear and grinding in reverse. I don't know how a manual transmission can grind if its already in gear so I would assume he means it grinds while he is shifting into reverse. Two issues. The popping out could be the fork yes.

Two gears trying to engage at the same time means a big grinding noise |
