Compression stops? Are they needed?
I went to get a set of valve cover gaskets today. I was expecting simple gaskets made of either cork or rubber but the parts dealer said the gaskets I was asking for did not have "compression stops" with them.
What are compression stops? Are they really needed? Right now the car has stock heads. I am not sure if the valve covers are stock or not. They say "Ford Racing" on them but I wasn't sure if the stock valve covers had that on them. Are these stops meant only to keep you from over torqueing the gasket? I was reading online and a couple people said they cracked their valve covers using compression stops. I mainly want to know if I can go without using them? I know how to torque a valve cover down without over tightening it. |

Yea you can use a gasket without them. I've done it quite a few times in the past. What you said is right, they're just there to stop you from over tightening.
