4 to 5 lug why?
Been searching multiple forums about this and I know the reactions will vary but bare with me.
Building an 89GT. Just throwing in a 331 nothing super powerful maybe 370-390 to the wheels from fordstrokers.com. Car is still 4 lug and will never see the track, just some horsing around and if done in time will make the power tour in 2012. I will convert the rear to disk but want the car to maintain originality. With all the above said are 5 lugs really needed for a car that will never see hard work? Can I get by just replacing the studs with upgraded ones? |

The only reason to switch to 5 lugs is for more wheel choices. This is with stock axles and 4 lugs

People switch to 5 lugs to gain a larger choice of wheels not for increased strenght.

That should work. I can't recall what the width of my stock wheels are but they came stock with 225's all away around. I am now running 245's all around. Look great in back, the front is a bit overboard though. 225s should look fine in front.

About the only time where 5 lugs are better than 4 lugs for strength is for autocross. And it's because of sideways forces, as in push/pull on the studs. As far as spinning (circular) sheer forces, there isn't anything for you to worry about unless you're launching on 15" wide rims and slicks. And you won't find those in a 4 lug anyway, lol.
