nice beat, but 4 days of sanding, painting, wiping, sanding, painting, wiping...ect.

It looks ok for a DD or winter beater, but if it's ever going to be for show... I'd rather get it done the normal way. I'm not sure of the practicality of race use, being that there is like 5 coats (sanded down, yes but still) on there and it could be heavier.... by a whole pound or two! actually.... it could be more if you did the whole car that way...

I really want to correct all the dings in my paint, but some are a little deeper than the paint, so I may need more than just a respray.

I did on my old Jeep and it came out amazing. Hold please for pictures. It cost less than $100 altogether, but did take about 150 hours of work. It looked better than most new paint jobs. The key to it is your prep work and the time and patience you have with your sanding.

EDIT:

Link to the build - 1990 Jeep Cherokee Build is Underway!

Pictures:

FINALLY DONE SANDING.

Rustoleum Primer...I learned my lesson with rattle can primer and I'd never use it again. When it comes to primer...spend the money. I sanded it out so it was all alright.

Starting the paint! Front is the first coat, then the rear door is a 320 grit wetsand of the primer, then the rear 1/4 panel is the primer.

More of the first coat.

400 Grit wetsand after two coats of paint.

More 400 wetsand after paint.

3rd and 4th coats!

Starting to get a good reflection on the 4th coat!

Where all the old crappy plastic paneling used to be.

No, but if you can get professional results with some time, effort, and for under $150, why not?

Guarantee that it's not professional results. I assure you that, no matter how good you think you did. May look good for under a buck fifty, but it will be far from professional. The scratch factor alone will tell you that. Not ball busting, just being realistic.

i read a 100 page post on this before! it started out with a guy from canada and his dukes of hazard like charger. i came across it on the 4x4 forums when i had my 93 ramcharger. the thread grew across the world literaly! people from totally differant car cultures from the o.p. joined the fourum just to ask q's . i wouldnt do my mustang like that in a million years , but i was about one really boared weekend away from doing it on my 4x4 toy! i have seen countless really amazing paint jobs with this process , but also some really really bad ones to!
colorado , you did a damn good job on that jeep!
like i said i wouldnt do it to my car, but for a cheep diy paint job on something i'm going to mud or trail i say go for it.

just doint do it to a mustang!!!!!

Pretty sure faststang is saying even though it looks nice, it may not hold up like a pro paint would. I have touched up spots using spray before and used the method above. Looked great but faded within a year and would scratch pretty easy. Looks great, not knocking it at all but I dont think it will hold up in the long run.

Apparently you dont need a garage, all you need is a yard and two lawn chairs....lol

150 hr's labor?! are you kidding?!

Not worth my personal time at that rate.

would rather pay macco.

What is $400 or so in paint compared to 150 hours of your time? It looks amazing IMO, but if I'm investing that much time, I would want quality paint to match my time invested.

You know, being a detailer, I work with a lot of paint. The clear coat on my Jeep hardened just fine and swirling and marring were at levels comparable to factory paint. The vehicle was sealed with great LSP's after the 90 day mark and was washed on a weekly basis with my standard two-bucket method, and I never had any issues. There were VERY few fine swirl marks that had found their way into the paint.

The only difference in composition between the two paints is that automotive paint is an acrylic based enamel, while Rustoleum is an oil based enamel.

I rolled on this job with high density foam rollers, was able to wetsand out imperfections to keep everything level, added my coats of clear, wet sanded that to keep those level, and after a final cut and polish had a brilliant look that looked better than many factory paint jobs. The pictures aren't lying. Those final reflection shots on the Jeep were that pure and clear.

I'm an utter perfectionist. I took my time to get things literally near perfection on this paint job. When the Jeep was up for sale, not a single prospective buyer knew the difference, and in fact everyone complimented my paint work as I advertised that it had 200 day old paint at the point of sale.

If I were to ever do this again, I would spray it instead of rolling it.

Had I sprayed all coats instead of rolling the bases and spraying the clear, then I would have saved myself probably 40-50 hours worth of work.

I plan on doing the Rustoleum Paint Job again on another "flipper" vehicle like this one (hopefully the next one won't blow a fucking head gasket and kill ALL my profits ), but I'll use an HPLV Gun and Compressor next time, and I'll take the hours saved and wetsand the last coat with 3,000 grit next time instead of just going up to 2,000. . I'm crazy, I know. But a beautiful shine in paint is unbeatable to me.

LMAO! If you really could get professional results like that everyone would do it and not pay 8K for a nice paint job. No way that paint has the quality of professional grade paint a 15 bucks a can. Spray can clear? Really? Let me see picks of the vehicle after a nasty winter and hot summer. 4 days to paint a fender? So it would take a month to paint a whole car? No thanks Just my .02
