Smoking Valve Cover Breather

the engine is near ancient. how much blowby is acceptable? im assuming at least thats where the smoke is coming from. car runs great btw

There are many thing that can cause smoke out of the breather. A lot of times, it can be condensation, or it can be a bad PCV.

i was just playing with the pcv and when i shake it i can hear the valve moving in there. but i have the pcv hose running to the valve cover fill neck instead of manifold vacuum in the port where the fill neck ran to the throttle body.

Its probably been doing it this whole time but you never would have noticed when your pcv and valve cover were hooked up to the intake. Normally that smoke would have been sucked back into the intake and been re burned. But i have no clue what causes excess crank case pressure

How is your system set up, are you running an open air breather on one of your valve covers? .. that PCV needs to be hooked up to manifold vacuum in order to do anything at all, but you don't want to hook it up like that if you have any open air breathers on your valve cover, otherwise it will let unmetered air into your intake.

He has a turbo, so the pcv Valve was disconnected from intake and a hose was ran from the pcv To the little tube on the valve cover that normally is hooked up to the tb. The filler cap on the valve cover was replaced with a breather. Both ports on the intake and tb were then plunged

Hey fogged306......The point of running the hose from the pcv valve to the valve cover was so that they could share one breather. And by disconnecting the valve cover and pcv valve from the intake and valve covers was to prevent boost from entering the crank case. If this was not a good thing then blame me cuz it was my idea....lol

Haha, nah, it's fine that way as long as there's a breather on the top of that fill neck and not the screw cap. The PCV isn't doing anything like that, but at least the breather is venting pressure from the crankcase via the fill neck. Boost won't get in the crankcase with a PCV hooked to the intake though. Once the intake sees boost, that pressure will shut the valve in the PCV and stop it from coming in to the crankcase. If the PCV gets stuck in the open position, then boost will get in there, but if the PCV is in good working condition then it's fine to leave that on the intake.

Ya that's what i was worried about, should the pcv valve ever got stuck, so this was my solution

wouldnt i still end up with boost in the crankcase from the stock setup where boost would enter from the throttle body to the fill neck? cuz im considered running a backup one way valve between the pcv and manifold. but then id still need one between the TB and fill neck.

on a second note, this theoretical setup would not work when boost is on right? but isnt that when im going to experience the most blowby and when the pcv system is most utilized? im afraid if i were to hold boost that the unvented crankcase would pressurize until i got off boost and the pcv clear it. so i mean unless i wanna go with a catch can or artificial vacuum source, im thinking my current setup is the best

Id leave it the way it is..... It was cheap and fool proof, no worries of boost in the crank case, and less parts to buy which means less parts to fail. Just my 2 cents

Yes, if that house was connected and a cap was on the filler.

cuz im considered running a backup one way valve between the pcv and manifold. but then id still need one between the TB and fill neck.

I wouldn't bother, with your rig idea is great until boost comes along and then you have no where to vent at all when you need it most. Well the crankcase will eventually vent itself through the next weakest point like through the rear main seal, valve cover gaskets, blow out the PCV valve, dip stick tube etc..

Yea it would get in through the fill neck... and good point about it shutting when you need it the most and c-case pressure having nowhere to go. Hadn't thought of that. I agree, breather is the best way to go here.
