Starter Cranks All The Time
One day i was just driving my car, stopped at a store and shut if off, started it again and the starter was cranking even after the engine had started. I shut the car off and it kept cranking. I got it home by removing the starter cable from the starter solenoid. Then i replaced the starter solenoid and all was well ... for 3 days. Then it started cranking all the time once again. I replaced the ignition switch and it still does it. Could the solenoid i bought be bad or is it my starter ( i'm going to replace anyway)? Anyone ever have this problem?
Sorry for the novel btw, lol

ive had a brand new solenoid go bad right out of the box. , next time that happens pull the little red wire with blue strip off the soenoid. its the one on the center post, thats what pulls the coil in on the solenoid, allowing for power to make across to the starter cable. if the starter turns off then id say its your ignition, if it doesnt turn off then id say its the solenoid
the starter will only crank if its getting power...

Removing that Wire doesn't solve it. Thats what confuses me, why is it getting power at all times. Could the solenoid have been fried by starting the car by touching the starter cable to the solenoid and then removing it once it fired (did that to get it home after the prob. started the second time).

No that won't fry the solenoid because all you did was send 12v to the trigger wire that normally sees 12v when you go to crank anyway.
But I do think the solenoid is fried from what you've described. If you pull the trigger wire off the solenoid and it keeps cranking, then it's failed to the closed position internally. It may just be a bad one out of the box, or you may have an issue that's burning them out. Or you have something wired wrong in the car. Do you have anything else connected to the output side of the solenoid other than the starter motor? |

I'm gonna buy anther solenoid tomorrow. I haven't rewired anything on my car but it deff has electrical problems (left blinker doesn't work w/ lights on, car gets hotter when lights are turned on, etc.). Their is nothing else on the starter cable side of the solenoid either. I'm kind of confused as to why the new solenoid worker for 3 days, then failed.

i had an 87 gt that did that all the time. id take the battery cable to stop it and if i put it back on itd still wanna crank. the only to stop it was take all the wires off the noid, and then put back together then itd start normal. i never figured it out i just ended up getting rid of the car. it was becoming a money pit. but good luck on yours

Mine did that once. I went to the liquor store to get some booze, and when I was ready to leave, I cranked it up, and the starter kept running after it fired up. I turned the key off and the starter still kept cranking.
So, I put it in neutral and let the clutch out, popped the hood, grabbed the big ass wrench I carry under my seat (for mechanical issues, of course ) and whacked the starter relay a few times with it. It stopped cranking. I replaced it with a new starter relay, and I never had another issue.
