engine problems?

My 87 306 was just rebuilt and I started it up to find my car is running really sluggish and pinging bad. So I removed my new MSD dizzy and put the stock one back in and it ran fine until the headers started glowing red. I need advice bad and really just want it to run. Can any one tell me why my headers are glowing red? And why my MSD dizzy thats new dont work with my engine? Any help is apperciated thanks

I would say the headers glowing are from timing too retarded. The MSD unit not working I have no idea.

I have the timing set at 10 degrees before TDC and even tried 12 I've been told that im running to lean. But how do I get more fuel to the cylinder's? I already have #30 injectors.

What makes you think getting more fuel is gonna help? With 30lb injectors and fuel pressure set to 35-40psi you are gettin plenty of fuel.. Usually like stated b4 glowing headers could be ignition or timing.. I doubt its a fuel issue.. Do you have an aftermarket balancer? Are the marks correct? Timing pointer correct or bent.. I really think its timing.. Also a extrememly lean fuel condition can cause it but that usually is with supercharged or turbo cars, but like I said as long as all your injectors and computer are working right and your fuel pressure is good I still am going with timing.. But those are the two main things that will cause that.

If they are glowing when the car is idling it usually means too much fuel. The unburnt fuel is still igniting in the headers, causing them to glow. If they don't start glowing until you are driving it is means a lean condition.

The balancer is stock and i guess I'll play around with the timing a little bit more and advance it more. I'll give more input after I do that. Thanks for the advice.

O and one more question can engine paint on the headers cause the red glowing as well. My friend painted them when I was doing something else and got pissed but they look nice.

I would say probably not. A friend of mine put high temp engine paint on the manifold on his Toyota and never had a problem.
