efi to carb

I recently bought a 88 lx coupe that was originally a 4 cylinder car. The guy i bought it from swaped in a 5.0 that he converted to carb, but the wiring is a mess. All of the EEC stuff has been removed like it should. I have been looking over a website called http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/e...b/efi-carb.htm. They have an efi to carb conversion guide, they explain how the wiring should be there is a gray and black 8 pin connector right above the brake booster on the drivers side. Which is supposed to contain all of the wires needed to get power to the fuel pump, oil pressure, temp etc. But the wires they are describeing i can not find. The car has an holley blue electric fuel pump. Has anyone done this before, and maybe could explain this a little better before i make this problem any worse.

You're in luck

I have done the same wiring following the same website. Although that is an awesome website with tons of useful information, the wiring info is not accurate for all foxes (I think they actually state that somewhere if you read closely).

I did this about 5 years ago so I'll tell you what I remember.

The fuel pump wiring as I recall wasn't where they said it was, instead I found the correct wiring under the passenger side kick panel next to the wiring for the factory computer. There I had to run a new ground wire and jumper the switching wire going to the relay to a switched wire. All of the colors were as described on the website, but you can get a wiring diagram if you want to double check.

After following this wiring, my fuel pump goes into constant on mode, when I turn the key to the on position.

An alternative to wiring this way is to go directly to the fuel pump relay which i located under the Driver's seat (yes I am not kidding, it is under the driver's seat). Basically all you have to do is run a new ground to the relay and whatever 12V source you want to use to switch the fuel pump on.

The tach and gauge wiring on my car was found by the brake booster as well as a switched 12V source to turn on the ignition.

As for the fuel pump, I am using a similar setup, I just spliced into the factory wiring harness for the stock fuel pump in the back of the car. I have not had a problem thus far with the wiring in approx 5 years, although the wire gauge is smaller (# higher) than recommended by most fuel pump manuf. I have run my car for hours at a time with no fuse popping or hot wires. I am using a 140 gph pump. I ran a new braided line for the feed and used the stock feed line as a return line, still my regulator cannot be adjusted below 7 psi due to the high volume flow. Something to keep in mind when you put that huge pump in there... :wink

It's not really above the master cylinder, more like "next to it". My car was done that way. Luckily, it's been back and forth a few times (efi to carb back to efi, and I'm running a carb) so the PO told me to use the wire with the "blue heat shrink" to trigger my ignition. And, I did have a switch plumbed into my fuel pump relay.

If you're still having trouble, shoot me a message and I'll look at the car for ya.
