Thinking about a project Fox
Hey guys, not new to the site, but to the pushrods yes. I have a 2003 GT that I love, but there is something about a fox with the ol' pushrod motor that makes me all giddy. I want to do a project build, and have somewhat of an idea on what I wanna do. For the shortblock I wanna do a 347, thinking high comp for nitrous, but not sure. What would you all recommend for heads and intake? Also, is the FRPP E 303 cam a decent cam, especially with nitrous? I'm thinking more so for keeping here SMOG legal in CA. The last 2 questions I have are, is a 5-lug conversion worth it? And, would I need to upgrade the trans (manual) to say a TKO500 or 600?

Haha I would man, but my internet is acting weird when I try to do it. Ya I like the Foxes, gf hates them, so all the more reason to get one. I'm only looking for a coupe too. Not a fan of the hatch, and don't care for the GT "body-kit" look. I wanna keep it a simple build, but have some giddy-up too.

So I'm thing gt40x heads, e303 cam, and a cobra intake are what I'm looking for, but is the intake gonna choke it too much with nitrous? Should I be looking at say an edlebrock intake or even heads too?

Ford motor sport letter cams are old out dated, both your head and cam choices are some thing that most of us would not recomened, theres much better chioces out there for the same amount of money
Such as trick flow

What is your budget for the car? Here's a suggestion...
Gt40p heads freshened- 350$ explorer intake cleaned up 130$ Stock cam- free on3 turbo kit with upgraded turbo-2100 OR Vortech kit @10psi- 3500 ish Either one will get you into the 10s and about 430-480rwhp depending on your tuner and dyno.

Really? Last I looked a pair of Tfs heads were over $1k and the gt40x were like $550 for the pair? I do want a motor that will perform, but it has to pass the sniffer in CA

Not if you get them used.
Now when you say the gt40x are 550, are you sure thats for the pair, that maybe the cost for one

The first ones cheap cuz its a single bare head. The other two are for the pair and fully assembled, so my point is, that from what i see there not 550.

Oops! Curse my inability to read. Ya that is per head. Looks like Edlebrock, TFS, or AFR will get the nod there.

Afr is good to, thats what i have but in a lot of cases will require you to notch your pistons, thats why i listed the trick flow as a good choice, cuz in most cases you wont have to do that...but that all depends on the cam you choose

Ya the cam is going to be tough. Are comps better with these motors than they are with th mod motors? That or even a Lunati Voodoo cam, as long as it's not super radical

Im not a cam guy, so i cant give advise about that. I do run a custom comp cam though.

Listen, you need to pass smog? Get AFR 165 heads with a stock cam, tmoss explorer intake, 1 5/8 headers with high flow cats and spray it with a 125. If you get a custom tune you could spray even more. But honestly, you'd probably shit your pants with that combo. Should be good for 11.50s or better depending on weight and traction.
As for a cam, it depends what your goals are. You need to pass smog, right? I would use a stock cam honestly. You CAN pass with an E-cam but they aren't good....

The afr 165 heads have smaller valves and are just about the only afr head that wont require you to notch your pistons, but again if i had the choice between afr 165 and a trick flow 170 , then trick flow it is, the afr has 1.9 intake & 1.6 ex valves. The tf 170 and above have 2.02 in and 1.6 ex valve, both are 50 state legal. The choice is yours
