Welp, here goes....

Started on my cam/head swap today. Only got about 2 hours to work on it, but I've gotten this far. Figured I'd post here and let everyone follow along.

You will get more done if you take things out as a full assemblys...for example you could have pulled your radiator out with the fan shroud still conected...

Ryan's right...it'll go smoother. Taking it apart AND putting it together. And he's going with Edelbrock Performer 5.0 heads. Idk what cam...I'm not sure if he bought that HR off of Fogged.

Edelbrock performer heads and not sure on cam yet. Need to see what lies beneath the intake.

This is true. I always seem to find more work for myself somehow or another

Cam is still up in the air, I'm fearing the worst on having a non-roller block. It's not the stock block and I'm not sure if the replacement was a roller or has provisions for the roller shit to go in.

You can always convert to roller man. Plenty of machine shops do it for little expense.

Even if its flat tappet, you can just get a flat tappet cam for CHEAP lol. That's one of the good things about them. Just don't buy em used.

Yeah engine definitely isn't coming out for machining lol. I personally hate flat tappet shit because you can't buy cheap used shit, and they never seem to last. I've replaced so many that have been worn out in SBC's I could do it in my sleep.

Yeah I hear ya on not ripping the motor out. I'm probably gonna have to if this new cam doesn't clear. I'm crossing my fingers it does.

Hopefully not...probably gonna be 230/232 @.050 duration at the biggest. Around. 530-.540 lift. Idk yet, I'm ordering it soon though from a cam grinder. Plus I'm having my heads milled so there's probably gonna be issues.

Lol... LS is not quite funded yet so I'm gonna build the 5.0 to satisfy my needs for now.

Didn't get a chance to post progress yesterday, but spent most of it catching up on sleep from a rough night at work. I did get the header bolts and spark plugs out after this pic. All that's left is the smog tubes on the back side and the heads are ready to come off.

But I did figure out that I do in fact have a roller block. Thank god. I was terrified I didn't. Also found what the source of the valvetrain noise was. 2 rockers that were terribly loose.

Any significance to this?

Just for the record, in case someone else reads this thread that doesn't know any better, the only thing you need to put a roller cam in a flat tappet block is link bar lifters. No machining required. Link bar lifters are also a superior design to the hold down and dogbones that come in these cars anyway.

Flat tappet block didn't. When you use link bar lifters, you don't need the spider and lifter bars (dogbones). There's a bar connecting the pair of lifters for each cylinder so they don't spin in the bore. They're capable of handling more RPM than the hold down and dogbone set-up and do the same job.

Yeah but I wasn't about to fork out the cash for that. If I wouldn't have had the roller stuff in it it was gonna get a flat tappet. I remember looking at some link bar lifters for an sbc and almost died when I saw they were mostly $400+
