Noob question!!!

Ok, so this is my first time getting this deep into a motor. I was able to get the TFS stage 1 cam installed last night, but noticed today, that it didn't have the dowel pin. What is this dowel pin for, and is it necessary to install? If it's necessary, can I just pull and use the pin out of my old cam? The cam was bought off ebay last year, and it didn't come with a dowel pin. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes it's necessary, it keeps the cam lined up with the timing gear. Can't help you with that last question because I've never had a cam with no pin. I do know they're pressed in though.

Shit.....sounds like I'm probably dead in the water then. Is this something that can be pressed in by a machine shop? Is that my only option besides a new cam?

It may be as easy as pulling the old one with a pair of vice grips and pushing it in to the new cam, I can't tell you for sure. Maybe someone else can let you know the proper procedure. I know if it was my car I would try vice grips and see how easily it came out of the old cam and how well it seated in the new one. The dowel should be hardened so marring it with vice grips might be a little tough to do.. Just my .02, but don't take it as sound advice because it's only opinion.

Thanks Fogged. The directions I'm following from http://www.allfordmustangs.com/techa...intakeswap.pdf
say to do the same thing. I'm gonna go soak it down with penetrant and see if I can get it out of the old cam. Worst case I suppose I could just use the stock cam. :-( Hopefully its not a sign of worse things to come.

UPDATE! I was able to get the dowel pin pulled from the old cam after all. I'm going to install it into the TFS 1 cam. Hope this works ok!

It should work fine. You'd be surprised how often machine shops si this when they buy generic new cams with missing dowels.

I would use some loctite on the end you put into the cam just as a precaution. I know you do this with flywheel dowels so it's probably not a bad idea here. Just make sure it's completely dry before buttoning everything up as you don't want any loctite getting circulated in your oil.

Do use bearing-stud mount on dowel pin. Use thread locker on cam sprocket bolt.

Make sure the hole in the cam is clean and free of dirt, the the dowl pin will seat all the way. It also try freezing the dowl pin, the should shrink the pin by a few thousanths,
