Looking to go automatic in my '83
Been thinking about switching out the 5-speed in my '83 for an AOD. The '83 has a 408 and a few people have told me that an AOD won't hold up to it.
Any suggestions?

A lentech AOD is badass, and will hold up. A little pricy, but all the AOD stuff is.

Biggest issue so far with the AOD is the main shaft. Most people tell me I will need a hardened/solid mainshaft. They say the torque of the 408 will snap a normal mainshaft pretty easily. Good thing is the car doesn't weigh very much.

Yes they ave a 2 piece main shaft. A Lentech doesn't. If you break a Lentech, you're a badass.

My buddy has a 89GT with a 427w backed by an AOD. Its the orignal one that came in the car, rebuilt with Raybestos blue plate clutches, Performance
Automatic one peice input shaft, Sonax billet servo, Trans Go AOD-HP shift kit, and a Precision Industries Stallion converter. It's been in his car for the past 5 years, trouble free. It works great, leave it in drive and it shifts by itself at about 6000rpm.

Went to Pull A Part today. Scored a 4r70w out of '99 5.0 explorer...................looked like it was the victim of a roll over accident. 60 bucks for the trans with converter. Now time to buy all the good stuff for it.
