T5 information
Well the time has come to rebuild my T5. I need a little information though. My car is a 91 GT. I believe the transmission is a 86, not the original one.
I have no idea what gear ratios it has for 1st and OD. I believe it is a 3.35 first gear because combined with my 410 gears my 1st is useless. I am going to purchase a 2.95 z spec gear set but I want to know what my overdrive gear will be. To find this out I have to count the teeth on the gear set, right? Which gears do I count and how do I multiply that to get the correct gear ratio for my overdrive gear? I believe it is an 86 transmission which came with fiber lined syncros. Can I use carbon fiber lined syncros since I am changing to the z spec gears anyhow? |

I believe your overdrive should be at .60
Assuming you're reusing your original overdrive. Mine are 1st: 2.95 2nd: 1.95 3rd: 1.36 4th: 1.00 OD: .60 I got an astro tranny. I think it's the same ratios

Nope, sure won't lol. I considered the ASTRO or GFORCE kits and came to the conclusion that a Tremec 3550 is the most econimal/wise choice. Do some research on it.

I went with an astro trans.
All said and done it came out to $1800. I didn't wanna mess with tremecs just cause I didn't wanna piece it Together. My tranny guy also told me that TKO trannys don't shift as smooth as an T5s or built one (Astro A5) north of 5500rpm..

Astro and G force are similar. Astro just trips my trigger, I guess. Astroperformance.com

I figured I could get a 2.95 gear set good for 450hp from Astro, a level 4 rebuild kit with all new bearings, seals, and syncros, and before shipping it should be around $840. After shipping I'm probably looking at around 1k. Of course I still need to get a steel bearing retainer but I figured in the end I'll still save a few hundred over buying a T5.
Several are available for about 1300 but I could save 200-300 by doing it myself. I've looked at several sources on rebuilding one and it doesn't look at that difficult. My only problem is going to be time because I will be starting my floor pans also and I'm sure that is going to take some time. |

if you are running a 302 based motor with 600 hp or less then an astro/ g forct t5 is the better option but a higher torque 351 based motor with 600+ hp is a gamble even with a g force or astro kit. most times when a trans goes out even a stock t5 it isnt even due to gear weakness its uausally other part failure that starts the train to sheer teeth off sutch as excessive endplay causing misalignment of gears, forks breaking, shift hub clips breaking, low oil heating bearings.

Sean, Ken here, are you in North Carolina now? Do you have plans to be at the Fun Ford Weekend at VMP this year?

Sean, what do you think of the Astro T5's vs the TKO? More money, but same ratings, and less weight. And if you purchase the upgraded shift kit for the TKO, you're basically at the same price anyway, but it's heavier and you need supporting parts. This is using info from Astro's website.

thats a tough decision. i would probibly choose the TKO. the small parts are beefier and less likely to fail. i have trust in the astro gearset but i have seen way too many other parts in a t5 fail under minor abuse espically fork pad supports, hub clips, springs, syncro dog teeth.
they do make solid brass hub clips, upgraded forks and fork pads and the round wire spring i have never seen fail but seems to have less tension.. but it is lighter and more compact...
