AODE to C4 Swap
89 Mustang GT
Anyone on here done the c4 swap with the "Big Bell"? Its the 164 tooth. It doesn't have the bell housing bolted to the pump. It has bolts directly to the housing of the transmission. I think they came out of trucks and vans. Just wondering what all would be necessary for the swap: Block plate flex plate flywheel-will my stock one work? drive shaft-T5 ds work? crossmember-Turn around backwards? coolant lines-Shouldn't be that hard But my biggest question is exhaust. Is there enough room for long tube headers? Just wondering for things down the road. Any info would be great, thanks guys! |

Most long tube headers are specific for T5 trans that will also work with small bell (157T) C4, unless you have AOD specific long tubes. Your AOD flywheel should work along with the drive shaft. Just need cooler lines & a shifter. If you have a manual valve body that should be it, if you have a stock valve body a kick down/TV cable will be needed.

-i believe you can use your blocking plate from your aod. -is your stock flex plate a 164t? if the bolt pattern matches the converter and its a 164t then it will work. -if you have a aod in your car you do not have a flywheel and if your going to a c4 you dont need one..... (flex plate is for an automatic flywheel is for a manual) crossmember is not turned around backwards... you have to grind the tach welds off from the tube and hammer it back. once it is in place and aligned you can tack it back of you wish. coolent lines are trickier then you think. if you plan on being legal or if you want to be safe then you wont use rubber lines and barb fittings. if one of those babys pop off (and it happens all the time) toy will find yourself in the wall or spun out in the middle of the road. also the coolent lines need to be done at the same time as the exhaust as the exhaust will interfear and if you melt through the lines you will have big problems.. you will also need a converter and you will need a shifter for a c4 remember there are forward and revers pattern valve bodies and different shifters for each. your driveshaft will work but check the leingth when you put it in. you may have to buy the driveshaft spacer from steeda like i did. yes some long tubes will work but it will depend on if you have a case fill or pan fill c4. pan fills are alot harder to work with.

Yes, it is a pan fill. My flex plate is a 164t and I believe the bolt pattern is the same. I will be running a reverse shift manual valve body, so i'll be buying a ratchet shifter as well. Do you know what long tubes will work with this exactly or do they have to be modified to work?
Thanks for the input guys! |

i cant help you as far as what headers will work. i use a case fill. the pan fills are kinda tricky. the best thing you can do is get the lokar dipstick it is flexable and will give you the most room. you might want to look into a b&m pro magnum shifter you will be much more happy with it then a ratchet shifter (ratchet shifters are for wemon anyway).

You will need to get AOD specific long tubes from either BBK or MAC, Hookers may work also. Hurst Quarter Stick shifter, hands down for reverse pattern!

I dont think you wanna use a 164 tooth... Go to 157, even if it requires you to buy another transmission... Makes the exhaust issue so much better...

^I'm with him all the way. Get yourself a case fill small bell C4. Way better fitment, use any header you want, the only way to go, IMO.

the problem isnt bellhousing the 164t isnt the problem its the pan fill that gets in the way. i have a 164t case fill and have no header clearence issues and the bellhousing doesnt even get close to the headers.

Okay, well its all I have right now. My dad has had it sitting in the shop forever as well as all the necessary rebuild parts. I guess may go ahead and have a 157t balanced as well for later on down the road and just run some shorties with an x pipe or something if I have fitment issues.
Sean, what kind of transmission do you have? Is the bell housing bolted to the pump or case, and is it aftermarket? |

mine is bolted to the pump. mine is a case fill c4. the internals will swap over if you can find a case fill case/ bell housing.

Oh okay cool, thanks for all the help! I'll see what will be going on later on down the road. Just getting everything balanced and trying to figure out what all I'll need to get done so I won't have any problems.
