Pushrod Length Help
I measured using the length checker. I did a 1/2 turn on the rocker nut and I got the measurement 6.417.
Now im confused...Should I go with 6.400 pushrods or 6.375 to compensate for the lifter preload, or doing the 1/2 turn already preloaded the lifters and I should just order the 6.400's ? Setup is hyd roller cam, hyd roller lifters and 1.7 cobra rockers. |

how does the pattern on the valve look when you turn it over?

It looks absolutely perfect. Directly in the middle. I used a black marker.
So that why im stumped. If it looks / works at 6.417 then should I just use a 6.400 pushrod? |

if it looks absloutly perfect and its sitting at a 6.417 then i would get a pushrod as close to 6.147 as i could....
if you can put the 6.4 in there and it still looks perfect then use that if you have them.

Ok sounds good. So when i torque the rocker, that "preloads" the lifter?

yes you are supposed to tighten it to the point where you cant free spin the pushrod then tighten it 1/4 turn then lock it and torque it. byt the time you do that it will turn into about 1/2 turn.

Wait, cobra rockers are pedestal mount. So to get the right preload you have to add to your length. Also how are you checking, with checking springs or are you flipping the plunger in the lifter or using a solid lifter?

you will need to buy a shimm kit from ford to use the cobra rockers in order to get the correct valve geometry most times. and in order to check the geometry you are supposed to be using a solid lifter or what i do is take 2 stock ones and tack weld the tops from moving then measure the leingth you need (with the shimm kit to move the rocker up and down)

ya since i moved from arizona to north carolina i kinda lost intrest in racing. i went to the local track and it just wasnt fun without the people who i used to race with. and it is only 1/8th mile. i was spoiled before having a 1/4 mile track 10 minutes from home. its expensive to haul a 24 foot trailer an hour to get to the track, burn 8 gallons of 114 then haul it home.. it would cost me $200 to make three 9 second passes. for $200 i could take me and my wife out on a buddys charter boat and go fishing for sailfish/dolphin for 8-10 hours.
im not really going backwards my car will still have a cage and it will still be fast but i converting it to e85 and ill put a bigger fuel tank in it and re wire the lights so they function. if i can shift it good it should still run a high 9 on the nitrous. but be able to drive back and forth as well.

Yeah, I understand. It's definitely expensive. I live 60 miles from the track, but I can still drive my car around on 91. I'm hoping on the transbrake I can run low 10s on the bottle. Maybe click off a 9 if I get real lucky. Obviously, I won't be spraying it on 91, but when I haul it back home, it goes 100% street duty. I'll just have to see how well that Chance converter works once I get it going again.

Oh I see. Don't want to cruise the street on the 8" converter? Lol. I'm curious to see how this one works with my car, since it wasn't built for it, but of it doesn't like it, I'll send it back to Chance for a restall. It's free to try. Lol

ya the 8" converter has way too much stall (5000) it generates alot of heat. and its too small to get to stall much lower then 4500. i would proly switch to a 10" if i stayed with the auto. but i would really rather have the manual.
ya most places when you buy a converter give you one free restall. converter builders are only as good as the information they recieve. there are so many vearibles that play into where a converter will stall that they almost never get them spot on first try. but once you put it in the car and hit the transbreak with no revlimiter and find out where it is dead stalling they can re adjust your fin angel and get it almost dead nuts on the second time.

Yeah, i know chance does good work too. I got this one from my buddy with the PA Supercomp C4, scattershield, JW bellhousing, and shifter all for $2K. Can't beat it considering that converter was $1800. His car weighed 2700 lbs, and made 790 HP on the motor, and had 2 kits on that. It flashed at 5400 in his car. Mine makes 520-530 ish, and weighs 3500 lbs, so maybe it'll all work out. About a 4000 flash would be ok for me. We will see I guess. I think it'll be way tight in my car. Even if I have to pay for a restall, it's only about $700. That's cheap, considering the cost of the converter.

4000 will not be too tight if you plan to drive it on the street. i wouldnt want to go any higher then 4000 unless you plan on putting a radaitor size cooler on that thing with dedicated fans lol.
