5.0 won't run!!

I have an 84 5.0, it's got an edelbrock intake and edelbrock 650 carb. My car died driving down the road and will not start again. Here's what's going on, the car turns over and starts but immediately dies. I've replaced the plugs, battery, ignition coil, cleaned all grounds, rebuilt carburetor, still nothing. I'm getting spark, it's getting steady fuel ( I can see it in my inline filter). What could be causing my motor to immediately die out like that? Any help would be great!

Have you tried pulling the fuel line from the tank and trying to feed from a gas can? If you operate the throttle with the air cleaner off and looking into the carb, do you see fuel squirt in the bores? Whats your fuel pressure at? Does it run off of a can of ether?

Yes, the carb fuel pumps are squirting. I rebuilt the carb so everything there is in spec and cleaned. I've tried running it by pouring gas in and still nothin, same with ether. Sometimes it'll even just catch my carb on fire. I'm stumped and it's very frustrating!!

Sounds like an electrical issue then. Timing is on? Did the ignition module burn out?

The car ran fine with the distributor the way it is now, I didn't mess around with timing besides just turning it a little bit in either direction. Is it possible for an ignition module to burn out while just driving down the road? And that would keep it from running at all? This is my first project car and I'm kind of teaching myself by researching and reading. Thanks

yes anything can fail at any time. pull the coil wire off the distrubitor and put a screwdriver in it and next to a ground turn it over and see if its getting spark.

if you havent change anything and its getting air and fuel then its not getting spark... thats all there is to it..

pull a valve cover off and see if the rockers are moving.... maybe you broke the timing chain.

I've replaced the coil, I've pulled number one spark out and it is getting spark, if my ICM was bad would I still get spark?

Thank you e3 and 01 v8. First time I got my car running since August. It was a bad ICM. Thought they were much more expensive that's why I hadn't replaced it. Picked one up for 35 bucks at autozone and the stang is running like new! Now I'll start my body work! Thanks guys!

Glad to hear you're up and running again. When I had my old truck I carried a spare ICM with me just because I had one quit like yours did.
