what should happen

my 89 hatch just don't feel like it's as fast as it should be, I just don't feel it. maybe it's because it's high miles but I'm not sure. It runs great but if I stop and floor it, no burn out, maybe a squeak, then a non impressive trip to wherever I take it. now if I floor it from a roll it will jolt your head slightly. I guess what I'm asking is it this is typical? headers and flowmaster mufflers are only mods. 3.73 posi. auto

Ive never driven and auto foxbody but Ive heard to start that they arnt as quick stock for stock as a 5sp, so that may be one downfall but it should still smoke the tires. I currently have the same problem and found that I have a vaccum leak somewhere still being diagnosed

that's what I was thinking. Just an example but it's like the car from a stop takes off from second. There is just nothing on the bottom. And it don't seem to have a vacuum leak. Maybe I should check my timing.

could also be the transmission not transferring the power through the drivetrain anymore.

have a compression and a leakdown test done and see where the cylenders are at compared to one another.

dont dump money into a potentially weakening motor. that is bandaiding a potential problem.

also when was the last time you did a good old fashoned tune up? maybe run some seafoam through it?

Stock engine auto 5.0's are dogs even with gears. My friend had an 88 GT with stock motor, auto and 3.90 gears and it really wasnt that impressive. His car only had 95k miles on it and i did a full tune up on it but it still just wasnt very fun. At the time, i had an 88 LX with a 5 speed and 4.10 gears and I would whoop on him. It was pretty sad actually because my car had over 200k miles on it with just regular iron gt40 heads with my 5 speed and 4.10s and I would leave his car in the dust whenever we would race haha.

So my advice would be to find someone in your area with a similar car to yours with an auto and race him to see if your car looses by alot which would mean theres something really wrong.

Also, I would do a full tune-up including spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, clean mass air flow sensor, change pcv valve, oxygen sensors, change your oil. Also change your tranny fluid. Dont do a flush, just drain and fill. Or check it to see if it needs a changing. Like Sean said, do a compression and leakdown test and running some seafoam through it definately wouldnt hurt. Check for codes. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. But if i were you I would do all this. Its gonna need to be done someday so you might as well do it now so you can eliminate possible things that are wrong off the list. Good luck man!

no engine light. yes I have the cats. I'm not saying it runs bad by any means, I just thought it would have more on the bottom.

Well that doesn't sound right. I have a stock auto except o/r h-pipe and b&m ratchet shifter. I think the Tranny is stock. I'm not sure I got it from the salvage for 60 bucks. But mine will rip the tires loose going 55mph. From a dead stop I get sucked into the seat and chirp 1st to 2nd gear. And occasionally 3rd. And that's with the Tranny being in D. If I do the 1-d-1 shuffle ill chirp into 3rd too. As far as I know my car is stock lol
