modding 1990 mustang

Hey guys, just a few weeks ago, I purchased a 1990 mustang gt. I got it completely stock and I was wondering what are the first few things I should do to increase power for relitively cheap. What mods and brand of each mod should I get?

Gears should definately be one of your very first purchases. I have 3.73's and they are my personal favorite out of all the aftermarket ratios.

If the car is a 5 speed I would get a short shifter. Its amazing how a shifter can completely change the driving experience. My first mod on all my mustangs is always a short shifter. The stock one is complete garbage and feels "mushy" to me. I personally recommend the Pro 5.0 short shifter. Its my favorite and I think it feels the best. When I bought my current mustang, it had a B&M short shifter installed and its actually pretty nice. MUCH better than stock but I still love the Pro 5.0 mostly because of the 2nd to 3rd gear shift. Its like butter lol. The B&M is kind of "notchy".

Exhaust is always a good way to go and will increase the power a little bit. But we all know that 99% of the time we upgrade exhaust for sound lol.

What kind of power are you trying to make and what are your specific goals for the car?

I would start with gears. 3.73 is usually a good choice. Next I would do full exhaust, then subframes, & rear control arms. As your budget permits, do your engine mods next. Just my 2 cents.

budget is cheap, goal is go fast!

If I were you and didn't want to spend too much money, I would look around for good deals on good heads, trick flow twisted wedge/ or fast as cast, a good custom cam, and a good upper and lower intake manifold, trickflow R, holley systemax. If you get good deals on all of that you could spend possibly 1200 and have a 12/11 second car. I am forever browsing for good parts at a good deal. If I don't see them, I wait until I find them. The only problem is you do all that and you will need more fuel so more parts and money, then you get power and cant use it because your car cant hook, again more parts and money. Its never ending so if you tell us your goal its easier to help.

Along with what hpjunkie said and Fastback endorsed, remember step zero: take car of any repairs and do all the maintenance. Nothing worse than spending all your money on go-fast parts only to have to park the car 'til your next paycheck because that leaky water pump finally decided to go or that noisy alternator finally stopped putting out the juice.

Good advice from this guy in the above post .
If you are doing the daily driver aspect with it , I would say bolt on parts frist.
ie , gears, k&n filter, exhaust with compatible headers, shift kit.
Make sure your tranny , drive shaft, u joints are best quality , upgrade on your brakes , rotors , & pads .
For handling , good shocks, struts, a good sound performance front end ...
I don't claim to know everything ,but I think starting with a good sound foundation build will get you started well on your way.

I personally like the bbk cai. It goes into the fender for cooler air and looks pretty snazzy if you ask me. And underdrive pulleys is a cheap way to pick up a few ponies for cheap and can be put on in like 5 seconds. Just make sure your alternator doesnt die...

And I agree with this also. Make sure its running right, before putting some upgrades on it. Some new rear tires too if they are in rough shape, lol.

Oh your far from me. Is there much of a mustang scene down there? Up here in Tulsa its all modular stangs. There is a crew of about 7 of us with foxes. That's about it. One Guy has two Mach 1s . One completely aftermarket, the other completely original.both beautiful

I know some guys with some badass foxes in Tulsa. One of them has probably the nicest fox I've ever seen. I do most of my car stuff with a ground from Moore/Norman/OKC.

What color is the fox? The nicest one I've seen around here was a orangeish bronze color. It was absolutely gorgeous!! But the group I hang out with its the only time I've ever seen a group driving around. Recently I have been meeting a lot more people. I know one Guy who has honestly at least 15 foxes. And only two run. His is a pacecar. And his son has a GT hatch with a 347 stroker. And a Turbo running 13 lbs of boost. That car is mean. That's the only really fixed up one I know. The group I run around with is mainly just stock foxes. Haha. Im the youngest of the group.

It's black, with white stripes. It made a pretty large number and is unbelievably clean. One of his brothers has an '03 cobra that made just a tick under 1000 rwhp, and his other brother has a mystic cobra that made 6xx rwhp.

The fox could be a show car, and it was. A few magazines before he bought. Now it's even nicer.
