Question on some tire sizes

I have a 91 gt. I have cobra r 17" rims on it. I wanted to get some rear tires that I can use on the street and the track. The tires will be mounted on the 17" cobra's. Wondering what size and what my best bet is. E/T Streets or? Thanks for your help!

(i tried searching for this but couldn't seem to find anything. So if this is an existing thread I apologize)

Do you know the width of the rim? That will pretty much decide the size that will work on those rims

Cobra Rs are either 8s or 9s (there's both), which means typically 245/45s or 275/40s, respectively.

How long do you expect these tires to last? Are you okay with replacing them in 5k miles, or do you need something that you can put more mileage on?

Is this a DD or a weekend toy?

It is a 9" width. It's only a weekend toy. I probably put 5k on it a year. I didn't take the quad shock out or anything. Ill only take it to the track a couple times a year but I'm just sick I constantly spinning tire. Only goes on the highway a handfull of times. What's the best bang for my buck? Basically, what I'm trying to avoid is buying a separate set of rims and slicks. Thank you!

Considering that it's still a street driven car, I'd be looking at a drag radial, like the NTO5R, 555R, etc.

I'll let the drag racers chime in, as DRs are really outside of my area of enthusiasm

What are my size options knowing that it's a 9" rim? Thanks for any input

Generally speaking, you can use a section width that's anywhere between about 100% and 125% of the wheel width, with factory sizing typically being right at 120%

So for 9", that's 228.6mm wide, so you're looking at anything from a 235 to a 285, with 275s being factory. Some guys say you can go all the way up to 130% of the wheel width which'd be a 295.

And of course, fudge the numbers based on how the tires run. If it's a known-narrow tire, bump it up a size, if it's a known-wide tire, bump it down.

Do you think i can go a little taller like a 275/45? or a 275/50? or will i be rubbing? i'm new with buying tires like this! haha

I use these on my 17" cobras. They hook very well, but don't do well in the rain. Also keep in mind that a DR is pretty sticky when warm, so if you fuck around on the street a little, they'll pick up every little stone they roll over and fling them into your wheel well.

Do you happen to have a picture of your car with them on? I want it to look full under the wheel well. How long have those lasted you? ish?

I've only had them on since this summer so I couldn't tell you how many miles you'll get out of them. Car is lowered. Never measured how much from stock though, it's on coilovers.

that looks awesome. Do you think you could get any taller in the back or is that pretty much as much rubber and youre going to fit in there?

I can get more height tire in there if I wanted to. That's a 26" tire. A 28 shold fit no problem even lowered. I did roll my fender and I have no quads or tail pipes.

Tail pipe clearance also varies between companies.
I know some flow master clear. My Mac 3" clear a 285/35zr18 with about an inch to spare.
No quad shock tho

I have no tailpipes either. Too bad they dont make those Hoosiers I posted in a 28. I'll be honest, I really like the white logo's such as hoosier or M/T written on the side. Kind of stupid reason to like tires but... Can't find many other drag radials with the big white lettering!
