1986 notch help

Hey fellas, need a little know how help here. I'm looking at an 86 notch 2.3 manual. Has a clear title for 400 bucks. I've searched high and low but all the swap info for a 5.0 is for EFI. I'd like to stay carb and manual, I understand how they work lol. If anyone can give me an idea of what I'd need I'd appreciate the help. Not looking for a 400 horse power monster, just a fun v8 cruiser.

Also a little background, I have access to a ton of fox parts (good friends w/ a mustang performance shop owner) and I have a 2 car garage waiting for a project. Lastly my fiancé already ok'd it haha

The easist way would be to find a wrecked 87-93 5.0 donor car. That way you have a solid engine, T5 trans, drive shaft, 8.8 rear end, bigger front brakes that will all bolt into your 86. Add a duraspark distributor, 4Bbl. intake & carb of your choice and have fun! Or you could add a set of 3.73 or 4.10 gears, a set of heads & cam and have more fun!

As an end product hell ya, but this'll be stretched out a bit and I don't mind sourcing the parts, really not to hard here in San Antonio. But I can't find answers to some questions like:

What year carb'd 302s will work
Only from mustangs?
Plug and play as far as wiring?

I guess what I'd like to know is to get the 5.0 into the car and running what all am I gonna need besides:

Double hump crossmember
Motor (year?)
5.0 t5
Read that the 4banger dshaft will fit
Header back exhaust

Thanks for your help!

Edit: If I was looking at donor cars (not so much) wouldn't 87-93 be fuel injected?

Just cuz the motor is fuel injected doesn't mean you have to run the efi..... That's one of the stronger hp motors, so that's what I would search for. Maybe even find an explorer motor and swap out the cam.

To run the EFI motor as carb'd is it as simple as replacing the upper intake manifold and dropping a carb on top or is there more to it than that?

Ps. Faststang, where in Minnesota are you, I was just up by Bemidji in October

It's not that hard, my car was originally a 4 cyl 4 speed car. You'll need exhaust brackets, double hump cross member, throttle cable from a 79 - 85 v8 car, duraspark or msd spark box, you'll have to tweak the brake lines in the back so they aren't touching the exhaust pipes, and some type of fuel system. You can get a drop in insert and run a holley blue pump and reg from summit for pretty cheap. I went with a manual rack so I'm not sure how to deal with the powersteering pump and lines. If you go with 5.0 engine from an 87 - 93 mustang then you'll need a carbed intake and a distributor for an 85 5.0 with a 4 barrel carb ( from any parts store ) because it will have the right gear to match up with the roller cam . I would run a performer rpm intake and a 650 double pumper , I've had a lot of success with this carb and intake on stock or mildly modded 5.0s.

Very cool, that's not bad at all. I talked to the guy today and I'm going with a gooseneck on thurs to pick it up. I know my first order of business will be sourcing a 5.0 and t5 but my shop I use prob has one, if not I know he can find me one. Should be a fun project compared to throwing money at my sixxer lol

For a lot of people it might be. But I'm good friends with a guy that owns a Mustang performance shop here about 10 miles away. So why buy a whole wrecked car (5.0s go for about 1500 wrecked here) and end up with a pile of scrap when I can get everything I need from Chris (the owner) for less?

My wife has a good friend just south of Willmar. We go there once a year for a summer party, and she goes up there other times throughout the year. It's about an hour and 20 minutes to her house. Anyway. Long tubes and prochamber here too, with their catback also. I like how it sounds.

Car came with the catback on it, I just added the prochamber and longtubes. Not gonna lie, if I were to purchase a catback, it would be the Magnaflow.
