I have heard good about coolant additives, but have never personally used them. What I have heard has been positive though.

Never used it, but it is highly recommended in the Mustang Performance Handbook (paid endorsement??). Says it does exactly what it is supposed to do. Improves the heat transfer between the block and the water.

I used Water Wetter in my big block Ranger and it didn't run any cooler. It ran hotter if anything. BUT, like always every vehicle is different.

watter wetter is designed to transfer some of your money to a company that makes pretty good lubes.

Purple Ice is a Royal Purple product. Like I stated, I have no real experience of my own with additives, I do know that ethylene Glycol (anti-freeze) has limitations, it also has a tendency to sludge and turn conditions in your cooling system alkaline. The impression I get is that the additives are not always a function of more efficient cooling, I hate to break the news but efficient cooling is much more a factor of surface area then "slicker" water. Additives if anything will only help improve system chemistry, which can be beneficial. I live in Texas, and right now it is about 102 degrees with the humidity, and plain ole anti-freeze and water is all I have ever ran. I am old school like that. That and a little time spent in chemistry dictates that water is an efficient cooling medium with a somewhat lower boiling point, however if you are running hot enough to boil all of the water out of your car you have more problems than "water wetter" will fix.

I guess take redline off the shopping list is the general consensus!!! Its only recommended for cars with minor heating problems anyways, and like stated before if you are really overheating, you got more problems than it will help. Probably was just a paid endorsement.

water wetter purple ice and all that stuff is supposed to reduce the surface tention of water there by reducing friction and heat also making the water flow smoother giving it less resistance but so does regular coolant and soap
fore those of you who dont know what surface tention is there 2 ways to explain it 1 fill a glass with water to the brim so the surface of the water is above the glass like a bubble than add soap the water will go flat and the excess will flow out of the cup 2 soap makes water wetter if you run water over your hands it will beed and run rite off when you add soap it reduses the surface tention of the water there by helping to clean. hope this helps |

I used it in my supercoupe cause my buddy swore by the stuff. But that car never ran hot anyway so I cant say what benefits it gave, if any.

Plain old water has a higher specific heat capacity then water mixed with antifreeze. Meaning water can remove heat more efficiently from something then a water/antifreeze mix. If you dropped a chunk of hot metal into a bucket of plain water, it would cool down quicker then if you threw the same piece of hot metal into a bucket of 50/50 water antifreeze mix. No one should run plain old water though because you may have boil over easier when you shut off your car, it freezes at 32F, and there is no corrosion protection. The water wetter products are an attempt to get the benefit of using a mainly water coolant for the increased cooling capacity, provide some corrosion protection, and reduce the surface tension (gives a much smaller laminar boundary layer) of the water or a 50/50 water/antifreeze mix to give you even better cooling then water alone. The wetter products do not provide any significant freeze or boil protection. The thinking is, since you get better heat transfer then 50/50 and water alone, you will keep critical parts of the engine cooler which allows you to tune a little more aggressively. It does not perform magic either, you still need a properly working radiator and fan. I make no claims of the effectiveness or usefulness. Just providing the theory. I guess the wetter products performance gains are similar to using a water injection or water/methanol injection kit, it is not really the wetter or the injection kit that provides the additional power, it is the aggressive tuning or additional boost you can use while using them.

I don't think anyone was advocating the use of just water, rather the benefit of additional chemicals in addition to anti-freeze/water.

Neither was I. I was giving a comparison of each. Water wetter is supposed to be used in plain water, not in a water/antifreeze mix. Using it in a mix is just about useless.
