If you are going to upgrade the heads, intake, cam, stroke it, then i say yes...If you are just putting the stock motor out of an old truck or van with all the stock parts, well then i say it wouldnt be worth it.

it's worth it if your goin to build it but i heard that the 302 is a stronger block and can take more abuse. this still asn't been proven to me but thats what folks say.....it's all up to you

Like they said if you are going to build it its worth it. You can get 500 easy hp form a stroked 351 without worrying about block integrity. HP comes cheaper for a 351 than a 302.

And my advice would be a stroker kit, and jam on the HCI. Windsors make furious stroker motors.

from what i have been told the windsor's can handle upwards of 800hp and 302 is about 500 max. i think the 351 would be better than the 302 because even stroking a 302 to 347ci the 351 still has 4 more ci's, and could be stroked over 400ci, thats just my opinion though

I just had a 351 windsor with trw forged pistons, arp headstuds and a FR motorsports cam. had it up for sale for only $250 and no body wanted it so sent it to the scrap yard. little off topic but just thought i would bring it up

I plan on putting heads intake and camming it may be a few bolt ons but I was thinking of doing fuel injection which is easier and better and do I have to change out the computer if I do this job

The 351w block is definitely stronger, especially the early blocks that were high in nickel. A two bolt block with a main girdle will take 800 hp. It may not live forever, but a lot lot longer than a 302 block with the same power. At about 600 hp 302s split from the lifter valley right down to the main webs.
HP ratings really depend on the particular block, how it was prepped/machined, and the tune on the motor. You can easily destroy a 302 with 300 hp and a really bad tune. A 351 with stock stroke compared to a 347 similarly prepared, no contest, the 347 wins every time. Consider bearing speed and rotating mass, the 351 crank alone is huge; stong, but heavy and with 3 inch mains (high friction losses). Additionally the block is a fair bit heavier, I think mine was about 70 lbs heavier. On the other hand the 351 will out last the 347. A 408 is the real ticket, it should in theory be stronger than a 347 and easily produce more power. |
