I have an '89 gt, built from the groung up. Only thing I did not replace was the key cylinder.
So it seem that the last tumbler in my key cylinder failed - I cannot insert the key all the way to turn to the run position. Anyone know how to remove it without being in the run position?
Problem is the key buzzer has broken off and is stuck in the back of the cylinder! Not letting the key go all the way in! Even though it may seem to be its not! You need to remove that with a pick of some sort! Dig it out! Trust me! Im a locksmith and have come accross this many of times!
Thanks SLRMARK, that is exactly what the problem was. I dug out the plastic laying on the bottom inside tumbler, hoped I got it all, and the key turned. Will this be an on-going problem? Should I change the key cylinder?
You can but the problem is not the cylinder itself its the plastic (grey) connector on the cylinder just remove it . You can unplug it if you take the column housing off and unplug the wire and pull the plastic off the cylinder. Then you will have no problems with that happening again!
Key cylinder from Advanced Auto - $13.74. What a deal! I will replace it for piece of mind. Thanks again.
