Factory Tachometer

I have a 90 5.0, how accurate is the factory tachometer? Is it necessary to put an aftermarket one in or is it safe to keep using the one that came with it?

There good till you really start getting into the upper RPM's. They can be as much as 500 RPM's off then.

I have a 6000 rpm rev limiter and my factory tach frequently shows well above 6500.
The faster I get to 6000, the more inaccurate the tach is.
Either my 6000 pill is bad or my tach is wrong, my money is on the tach
I haven't felt the need to get an accurate tach although a small accurate shift light would be nice.

On my 88, the factory tach is off by 1200 rpms on the top end. At the actual rpm of 6000 my factory tach reads 7200 (just past 7). It is already off by 400 rpms at 2600 (it reads 3000).

My 89 is not as bad, only about 600 rpms off at the top end.
