What gears should i put in?

I have an 87 gt 5.0 HO,T-5,and an 8.8 rear end. I have excellent acceleration in the first 4 gears but fifth is about pointless. I can get about 110 outta 3rd gear and still be in the safe side of redline.I think the gears in the rear end are too tall. I wanna keep good get up but still wanna be able to hual azz too. What do yall think i should replace the gears with? :award

I know 5th is "overdrive" but man its gotta be able to give some kind of power. 345 rwhp should be able to give me something in every gear! 1st through 4th are riddiculously fast. I dont know what gears are in there now but i suppose they are still in stock configuration.

I dont think you will ever feel anything in 5th...Its not a pulling gear...go with a set of 4.10 or if you dont drive highways go with a set of 4.55's...I had 4.55's in my old 91 hatch and loved it...But I never drove on a highway with them though...

you could go with the .89 5th gear kit that Astro Performance Warehouse sells. been thinking about it myself since i rarely use the highway.

the one thing i don't like about my 3.73s is that, when making a turn the revs are too high in 2nd (for my taste, too LOUD) and too low in third. 3.55s or maybe 3.27s might eliminate this problem, but i think i'd rather try 4.10s

I think i have 2.73 in my stang.. i can cruise at 85 on the highway about about 2.5 grand rpm i think.. (its been a while since i drove the car). but i want to put in 3.55 gears.. i hear 3.27 would not make a significant difference while 3.7 ive riden in and is very revvy on the highway.. 4.10 iv e rid in too and its screamy!!

u also hav to change the speedo gear under the dash too dont u? or is it at the other end in the tranny case..?? im not remembering..

Ie im soon getting the car out of the garage after a long storage..

I have 2.73's and I run about the same. 80MPH and about 2300 RPM.

Once I get the car in the garage for the work over I plan on putting the set of 3.27's in and going from there.

I drive 75 miles a day with it so keeping the Gearing close to factory.

you'll just need to change the speedo gear at the end of the speedo cable, sticking in the driver side of the tranny.

Go with 3.73 with a 23T speedo gear.

i think im going w a 3.55 (if i keep my car, was going to sell).. i had a 3.27 ready but people told me to get a 3.55 , more signif increase.. i think a 3.7 is too revy on the highway for me...

i think i also need a whole new cable while i swap out the gear for the speedo... mine makes noise under the dash.. i hear its a heck to replace.. fun fun..
